Department of Employment and Labour to Host Conferences on Empowering Labour Inspectors

The Department of Employment and Labour has announced two upcoming conferences that will focus on the crucial role of labour inspectors in ensuring fair working conditions and protecting vulnerable workers. The events will be held in KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape, providing a platform for inspectors from all provinces to engage in conversations about compliance with labour legislation.

Emphasizing Adherence to Crucial Labour Laws

The Inspection and Enforcement Services (IES) branch of the Department of Employment and Labour is spearheading the initiative, with an emphasis on advocating for adherence to crucial labour laws such as the Basic Conditions of Employment Act (BCEA), Unemployment Insurance Act (UIA), Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases (COID) Act, National Minimum Wage Act (NMWA), Employment Equity Act (EEA), Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), and Employment Services Act (ESA). The conferences aim to educate both employers and employees on the implications and amendments of these legislations.

Theme and Dates of the Conferences

Set under the theme “Accelerating Compliance for an Equitable South African Labour Market,” the first conference will be held from September 20-22, 2023, in Durban, followed by the second conference from September 27-29, 2023, in Mbizana. Both events will be open to media coverage and run from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.

Advocacy to Create an Equitable Labour Market

The conferences are a crucial part of the Department’s advocacy mandate to create an equitable labour market that addresses the unique vulnerabilities faced by workers across different sectors. The events aim to foster awareness about compliance with labour legislation, promote a culture of understanding and adherence to these laws, and tackle issues like inequality, discrimination, and exploitation.

Exploring the Current State of the Labour Market

The conferences will also explore the current state of the labour market, including its challenges, trends, and opportunities. This holistic approach to understanding and shaping the future of work in South Africa will ensure that the Department’s efforts remain relevant and effective, empowering labour inspectors to make a genuine difference.

Commitment to Uplifting and Protecting Vulnerable Workers

The Department’s decision to host these conferences is a testament to its unwavering commitment to uplifting and protecting vulnerable workers throughout the nation. By equipping labour inspectors with the knowledge and tools they need to enforce fair working conditions, the Department hopes to create a more inclusive, equitable, and prosperous labour market that benefits all South Africans.
