Deputy Minister Alvin Botes Leads South African Delegation to NAM Ministerial Meeting in Azerbaijan

On July 5th and 6th, 2023, the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Ministerial Meeting of the Coordinating Bureau (CoB) took place in Baku, Azerbaijan, with the theme “NAM, United and Steadfast in Confronting Emerging Challenges.” South Africa’s Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Mr. Alvin Botes, led the country’s delegation to the event.

Deliberations on Preparations for the NAM Heads of State and Government Summit Conference

The gathering focused on the preparations for the 19th Summit Conference of the NAM Heads of State and Government, which has been scheduled to hold from January 15th to 20th, 2024, in Kampala, Uganda. The meeting also reviewed NAM’s positions on global issues, such as development, human rights, peace and security, and the promotion and preservation of multilateralism, in keeping with the United Nations Charter and the Bandung Founding Principles.

The NAM Ministerial Committee on Palestine

Additionally, the NAM Ministerial Meeting of the CoB featured a session of the NAM Ministerial Committee on Palestine, of which South Africa is an active member. The committee’s role is to coordinate NAM’s activities in supporting the Palestinians’ struggle for self-determination.

Outcomes of the Meeting

The NAM Ministerial Meeting of the CoB concluded with the adoption of two significant outcome documents: the “Baku Political Declaration” and the “Political Declaration of the NAM Ministerial Committee on Palestine.”

The Non-Aligned Movement’s Commitment to Unity and Efficiency

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the Non-Aligned Movement has remained united and efficient, showcasing its commitment to its founding principles. As the largest coalition of countries outside of the United Nations, with 120 Member States, NAM plays a vital role in global and multilateral affairs, particularly in today’s world, where geopolitical divisions are negatively impacting the interests of developing nations.

NAM’s Role in Promoting Collaboration and Understanding Among Nations

Since its establishment in 1961, the Non-Aligned Movement has been instrumental in championing developing countries’ interests by eradicating colonialism, supporting the struggle for liberation and self-determination, pursuing world peace, and striving for a more equitable and just international order. NAM’s ability to bring together a diverse array of nations underscores its dedication to fostering unity and cooperation in the face of global challenges. As geopolitical divisions persist, organizations such as NAM will remain essential players in promoting collaboration and understanding among nations and striving for a more equitable world order.

South Africa’s Commitment to International Cooperation and Diplomacy

At the NAM Ministerial Meeting, Deputy Minister Botes and the South African delegation engaged in crucial discussions and negotiations, reaffirming the country’s commitment to international cooperation and diplomacy. By actively participating in global conversations and taking on leadership roles in international organizations, South Africa demonstrates its dedication to the pursuit of peace, prosperity, and development both at home and abroad.

The NAM Ministerial Meeting of the CoB in Azerbaijan was a testament to countries coming together to address shared concerns, foster cooperation, and work towards solutions in an increasingly complex and interconnected world. As global challenges continue to emerge and evolve, the Non-Aligned Movement’s role as a united and steadfast force for good will only become more critical in navigating these uncertain times.
