Deputy Minister Fish Mahlalela Announces 2023 National Tourism Careers Expo

The Department of Tourism (DT) is set to collaborate with the Culture Arts, Tourism, Hospitality & Sport Education Training Authority (CATHSSETA), the Gauteng Department of Economic Development, and the Gauteng Tourism Authority (GTA) to host the 2023 National Tourism Careers Expo (NTCE). Deputy Minister of Tourism, Mr. Fish Mahlalela, made the announcement during a media briefing. The event is scheduled to take place at the Joburg Expo Centre in Nasrec from 29 September to 01 October 2023.

Offering Career and Business Opportunities for the Youth

The NTCE has been an essential platform for industry professionals and learners since 2008. The event provides young individuals with the opportunity to interact directly with potential employers in the tourism sector. The 2023 youth expo, themed “Tourism Investments for People, Planet and Prosperity,” will focus on empowering communities, conserving the environment, and driving innovation and prosperity for all.

Government’s Commitment to Nurturing Talent

Mr. Mahlalela, along with representatives from the Gauteng Department of Economic Development and CATHSSETA, emphasized the significance of the NTCE concerning youth empowerment and sector growth. This initiative aligns with the government’s commitment to nurturing a talented workforce that will contribute to the development of a vibrant and sustainable tourism industry.

Venue and Media Engagement

The Maropeng Visitor Centre, located at the Cradle of Humankind in Gauteng, will serve as the venue for the media event on 12 September 2023. Members of the media who wish to attend are required to RSVP to Sindi Zwane via email or WhatsApp. Shuttle pick-up services will be provided from Mason Africa Group’s office in Illovo, Johannesburg.

Prioritizing Sustainable and Responsible Travel

The NTCE’s focus on people, planet, and prosperity aligns with global tourism trends that prioritize sustainable and responsible travel. As more travelers seek authentic experiences and a deeper connection with the places they visit, the expo’s emphasis on community empowerment, environmental conservation, and innovative approaches to tourism will be crucial in meeting the evolving demands of the industry.

Fostering a Skilled and Passionate Workforce

The NTCE serves as a platform for young people to gain valuable insights, network with potential employers, and explore various careers within the tourism sector. Such opportunities are essential for fostering a skilled and passionate workforce that can drive the industry forward.

Investing in the Future of the Tourism Industry

The 2023 National Tourism Careers Expo represents a significant milestone in the government’s efforts to invest in the future of the tourism industry and empower the youth. With a focus on sustainability, community empowerment, and innovation, the event is poised to make a lasting impact on the sector and contribute to the growth and prosperity of South Africa’s tourism landscape.
