Deputy Minister of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment, Ms. Makhotso Sotyu, spearheaded the Nelson Mandela International Day Outreach Programme on July 18, 2023, in Mangaung, Free State. The theme for Mandela Day 2023 was “It’s In Your Hands,” which presented an opportunity for people worldwide to make a difference in their communities by focusing on the pressing issues of climate, food, and solidarity.
The Nelson Mandela Foundation highlighted the importance of addressing climate change and fostering resilient food environments as crucial steps in tackling poverty and inequality worldwide. These objectives align with the Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment’s mission to equip communities with the knowledge and resources to address environmental challenges.
To celebrate Mandela Day in Mangaung, Deputy Minister Sotyu distributed garden tools and equipment to schools to cultivate community food gardens. Additionally, Sotyu provided school desks, shoes, sanitary pads, and other personal supplies to support local children. As a further effort to support the community, a waste management truck was donated to the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality to enhance waste collection in the region.
The International Mandela Day Outreach Programme emphasizes the importance of fostering unity and community engagement when addressing environmental issues. The donation of garden tools and equipment exemplifies this effort by strengthening the relationship between people and their environment. Community food gardens promote resilience and sustainability, allowing communities to grow their food and become less reliant on external sources.
The donation of school supplies and personal items to local children highlights the significance of supporting the next generation. By providing essential resources, the programme ensures that children have the necessary tools to thrive in both their education and personal lives. The investment in the youth’s future echoes the values of Mandela Day by building a brighter tomorrow.
The provision of a waste management truck to the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality demonstrates the interconnection between environmental stewardship and community development. By improving waste collection and management, the municipality can provide a cleaner living environment for residents, contributing to a healthier and more sustainable future.
The theme of Mandela Day 2023, “It’s In Your Hands,” is a powerful reminder that each individual has the power to effect meaningful change. Through acts of solidarity and engagement with critical issues like climate change, food security, and community resilience, people can make a difference in the world, just as Nelson Mandela envisioned.
The Mandela Day Outreach Programme in Mangaung serves as an inspiring example of community collaboration and investment in the wellbeing of future generations. By harnessing the power of collective action, people can make a positive impact on the world, just as Nelson Mandela envisioned.
