On July 18, Deputy President Paul Mashatile will partner with the Charlotte Mannya Maxeke Institute in Soweto to commemorate the annual global celebration of Nelson Mandela International Day. The late South African President, also known as Tata, left a legacy that inspired many to follow his values and principles of making a positive impact in their communities. Deputy President Mashatile aims to inspire individuals, communities, and organizations to reflect on Mandela’s legacy and values.
This year’s theme focuses on combating climate change while addressing poverty and inequality. The event will include planting 12 vegetable beds at Morris Isaacson High School in Jabavu, Soweto, and presenting gifts to learners at Morris Isaacson and Matseke High Schools. Additionally, gifts will be handed over to the elderly residents of the Soweto Home for the Aged.
To honor the memory of freedom fighters, the Deputy President will lay wreaths at several locations, including the Tsietsi Mashinini statue in Jabavu, the Nelson Mandela House in Vilakazi Street, and the Hector Pieterson Memorial and Museum in Orlando West.
Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi, Deputy Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Parks Tau, and other government officials will support the Deputy President in the event.
The media has been invited to attend and cover the event, which will take place on Tuesday, July 18. The day’s itinerary includes visits to Morris Isaacson High School, the Tsietsi Mashinini Memorial, the Soweto Home for the Aged, Matseke High School, the Nelson Mandela House, and the Hector Pieterson Museum.
