Former Springbok rugby player, Derick Hougaard, has recently overcome a significant challenge. After being in a coma for over ten days due to a respiratory condition, Hougaard woke up and began responding positively to medical personnel and treatment. This is a remarkable turn of events, considering reports suggested he only had a 50-50 chance of waking up.
Despite the odds against him, Hougaard’s recovery has progressed well. Recently, he was discharged from the hospital and returned home. However, he still has a long road to recovery ahead of him. According to his partner, Nádine, he is currently extremely weak and unable to hold a conversation due to swollen vocal cords. Nonetheless, his release from the hospital marks a significant milestone in his recuperation journey.
Throughout his rugby career, Derick Hougaard has been a formidable presence on and off the field. He played eight tests for the Springboks, beginning with the 2003 Rugby World Cup match against Uruguay in Perth. His final test took place in July 2007 against the All Blacks in Christchurch. With 69 points to his name, including two tries, 13 conversions, 10 penalties, and one drop goal, Hougaard was part of the winning team in four of his tests.
Since retiring from rugby, Derick Hougaard has pursued a variety of interests, reflecting his multifaceted personality. He attempted a career in the National Football League and participated in a celebrity boxing match against South African musician François van Coke. He is also said to be working on a documentary about his life.
Hougaard’s journey serves as an inspiration to many. Overcoming challenges is not an unfamiliar concept for the former Springbok; he is well-versed in the art of bouncing back. His resilience and determination in the face of adversity are qualities that have defined his life and career.
The road to full recovery may be long and arduous for Hougaard, but his spirit remains unbroken. He must rely on an oxygen machine for a few more weeks, marking a crucial aspect of his rehabilitation.
