South Africa’s Klein Karoo, known for its rich flora and fauna, is home to the legendary Big Five game: African lion, elephant, leopard, Cape buffalo, and rhinoceros. While these creatures have been associated more with the eastern regions of South Africa, a new addition to the country’s wildlife offerings has emerged in the Klein Karoo – Mont Eco, a private Big Five game reserve.
Located just 25 kilometers from the quaint town of Montagu, Mont Eco sprawls across a unique, malaria-free terrain along the Langeberg mountain range. Its exceptional setting within the Cape floral kingdom comprises three distinct biomes – Nama Karoo, Succulent Karoo, and Fynbos – creating a rich biodiversity of succulent plant species.
Mont Eco’s philosophy is centered around sustainability, with the 6,500-hectare conservation reserve being rehabilitated and off-grid, emphasizing ecological responsibility. Guests can enjoy not only the diverse wildlife but also the open plains, mountains, rocky outcrops, and riverbeds characteristic of the area. Mont Eco’s re-introduction program, backed by extensive research, brings back not only the Big Five but also iconic Karoo species such as the Brown hyena, aardvark, eland, oryx, and klipspringer.
Mont Eco offers guests two luxurious lodges: Kingsley Lodge, which is currently open, and Mountain Lodge, which is set to open soon. Both lodges provide suite accommodations for 14 guests, reflecting Mont Eco’s low-density approach to wildlife tourism. The spacious suites feature a living room-bedroom, walk-in shower, private deck, and a well-equipped self-catering kitchenette, with modern amenities including a dedicated fiber-optic WiFi station and air conditioning.
A variety of activities and experiences await guests at Mont Eco. Game drives, intimate dinners, and stargazing are among the highlights. Visitors can also take advantage of introductory offers and various packages designed to suit their preferences.
Mont Eco has positioned itself as a remarkable destination for those seeking a sustainable and immersive Big Five encounter in South Africa’s enchanting Klein Karoo region. With its commitment to ecological responsibility and luxurious accommodations, Mont Eco offers an unparalleled opportunity to encounter captivating animals in a pristine natural environment.
