The Rising Sun and the Rising Aspirations

As day breaks over the Sevens Stadium in Dubai, the Springbok Women’s Sevens are prepared to lock horns with the world’s most formidable rugby teams at the HSBC SVNS tournament. Driven by their unwavering dedication and strong resolve, they approach the prestigious world-class event with a steely determination. Asisipho Plaatjies, an impactful forward in the team, views this not merely as a contest, but as a fight for survival on the global stage.

Plaatjies, a University of Fort Hare graduate with a degree in Public Administration, is well-accustomed to the high stakes of international sports events. She has represented South Africa in Toulouse and Cape Town, donning the symbolic green and gold. However, she admits that the intensity has been ramped up following their successful qualification for the World Series via the Challenger Series tournaments.

A Wake Up Call and the Road Ahead

Plaatjies recalls that their triumph at the Africa Cup, which unlocked their path to the upcoming Olympic Games, served as a reality check. “Suddenly, we found ourselves rubbing shoulders with the crème de la crème of the rugby world. Every match henceforward will be intensely competitive, but we are well-prepared for the challenges waiting for us,” asserts Plaatjies.

For the Springbok Women’s Sevens, the ultimate aim is to cement their position on the circuit that requires steady performances across several tournaments over an extended period. The odyssey commences in Dubai, a city that Plaatjies is thrilled to compete in, given her prior experience in last year’s International Invitational tournament.

A Familiar Turf and the Looming Challenge

Dubai is not foreign terrain for Libbie Janse van Rensburg either, who is making her tenth visit, but her first wearing the national green and gold as part of the Springbok Women’s Sevens team. She cherishes her previous sojourns with Tuks Women, but confesses that this time, adorned in the national colors, feels exponentially more special.

Van Rensburg acknowledges that the impending tournament presents a challenge, but she believes their intense training back in Stellenbosch has provided them with the necessary strength. “Getting to this point was a monumental struggle, but the real examination begins when we go head-to-head with the world’s top-notch teams,” she states.

The Springbok Women’s Sevens team will confront New Zealand, Fiji, and Great Britain in Pool A on Saturday. With a team spirit that breeds optimism, they are ready to make a lasting impression on the global Rugby scene.

Representing the Spirit of a Nation

Their journey exemplifies their relentless quest for supremacy, their unwavering resolve to tackle all obstacles, and their staunch spirit of representing South Africa on an international pedestal. As these formidable women claim their spots on the field, they are not merely participating in a match; they are embracing the challenge, welcoming the struggle, and personifying the resilience of their nation. Their odyssey is not solely about the triumph or defeat, but about the courage to face the world without fear.
