President Cyril Ramaphosa is committed to empowering the youth of South Africa through various employment initiatives and readiness-to-work programs. These initiatives provide young individuals with opportunities for capacitation, funding, and mentorship to accelerate youth economic emancipation for a sustainable future. Among these initiatives is the Presidential Youth Employment Initiative, which has achieved several milestones since its inception.
To address South Africa’s growing concerns about climate change, unemployment, and inequalities, President Ramaphosa will attend the World of Work Summit in Geneva, Switzerland, from June 14 to 15, 2023. The International Labour Organization organizes the summit to forge a Global Coalition for Social Justice that will accelerate the attainment of Sustainable Development Goals.
The President will host a joint working visit with the Prime Ministers of the Netherlands, Mr. Mark Rutte, and Denmark, Ms. Mette Frederiksen, on June 20, 2023. This visit aims to maximize the positive impact of Dutch and Danish high-level business and investment delegations. The collaboration between the Netherlands and Denmark in green hydrogen investments also strengthens South Africa’s ties with two essential European partners.
Furthermore, President Ramaphosa will participate in the Summit for a new Global Financing Pact from June 22 to 23, 2023, in Paris, France. The summit aims to build a new contract between countries of the North and the South to address climate change as a global crisis. It will provide an opportunity to discuss key issues, such as the reform of multilateral development financial institutions, debt crisis, innovative financing, international taxes, and special withdrawing rights (SDRs).
As South Africa progresses, the inquiry panel led by retired Judge Phineas Mojapelo continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the docking of a Russian vessel, Lady R, in Simons Town. The panel will interact with all concerned role players and hear from interested parties with information that will assist its investigation.
On a somber note, President Ramaphosa has expressed his deepest condolences to the family, friends, and soccer fraternity of legendary Bafana coach Clive Barker, who passed away on June 10, 2023, at the age of 78. Barker played a pivotal role in South African football and its development, leading the nation to victory during the 1996 African Cup of Nations.
The President also joined the global media fraternity in mourning the passing of media tycoon Silvio Berlusconi, who died at the age of 86. Berlusconi created Italy’s largest media company and served as the country’s Prime Minister in four governments. President Ramaphosa offered heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Italy.
President Ramaphosa’s schedule showcases his determination to empower the youth, strengthen international relationships, and address pressing global issues. As South Africa moves toward a more sustainable and equitable future, these engagements demonstrate a commitment to collaboration and progress.
