On July 29, 2023, 223 young men from the 23 ALPHA group graduated from the Chrysalis Academy in a memorable and uplifting ceremony. These graduates come from various corners of the province and have successfully completed the three-month development and empowerment course that the Chrysalis Academy offers. This transformative institution is committed to nurturing and developing the potential of vulnerable young people aged 18 to 25, with more than 10,400 graduates.
Mr. Reagen Allen, the Minister of Police Oversight and Community Safety, delivered an inspiring keynote address during the graduation ceremony. He expressed immense joy in witnessing the pride and enthusiasm of the graduates and their families and emphasized the paramount importance of investing in our youth, particularly those from vulnerable communities. Mr. Allen believes that empowering and developing these young individuals can help dismantle the cycle of disenfranchised youth who may otherwise be tempted to pursue a life of drug abuse and crime. He commended Dr. Meyer and her team at Chrysalis for their unwavering dedication to helping young people discover and reach their potential.
The Chrysalis Academy offers a diverse curriculum that includes practical training in various fields such as Basic Cookery, Office Administration, Security Training, Peace Officiating, Welding, and Electrical Circuitry. Along with technical skills, the course focuses on personal development and life skills, covering topics like Personal Mastery, Emotional Intelligence, Leadership, Diversity, and Conflict Management. This comprehensive approach to education empowers graduates to deepen their resilience, unleash their potential, and become agents of positive change in their communities.
The Chrysalis Academy’s mission is not only to help young people develop physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual resilience but also to inspire them to achieve their future goals. As role models, these graduates now bear the responsibility of sharing their Chrysalis experience and guiding other young people away from harmful paths.
The graduates’ journey does not end with the completion of the program. They will now enter a 12-month work placement initiative in collaboration with various safety partners through the Department of Police Oversight and Community Safety. This opportunity will allow them to apply the knowledge and skills they acquired during their time at the Chrysalis Academy, further enhancing their personal and professional growth.
Graduation day for these Chrysalis participants signifies not only the successful completion of the program but also the beginning of a new chapter in their lives. These young men are now equipped with the skills, knowledge, and determination to seize the opportunities that await them and to make a lasting, positive impact on their communities.
By transforming the lives of its graduates and nurturing their potential, the Chrysalis Academy continues to play a vital role in breaking the cycle of disenfranchisement and fostering a brighter future for our youth. With each new group of graduates, hope and inspiration are ignited, paving the way for lasting change and progress.
