Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure, Mr. Sihle Zikalala, will address emerging contractors in Komani, Eastern Cape, on August 10, 2023, in a move to empower women in the construction industry. The meeting aims to engage with the province’s emerging contractors, with a specific focus on Women in Construction. Eastern Cape MEC for Public Works and Infrastructure, Honourable Ntombovuyo Nkopane, and Executive Mayor of Emalahleni Local Municipality, Councillor Nontombizanele Koni, will accompany Minister Zikalala at the event.
The gathering will serve as a platform to celebrate Women’s Month, acknowledging the indispensable role women play in the construction sector. The government is dedicated to promoting gender equality and economic empowerment for women in traditionally male-dominated industries.
Many of the contractors attending the event are part of the Department’s EPWP Vuk’uphile Contractor Development Programme, which provides training and mentorship for emerging contractors, ensuring they receive necessary skills and resources. The programme has been influential in facilitating the growth of these contractors and contributing to South Africa’s economic growth.
A significant part of the day’s agenda will be visiting the EPWP Road Maintenance project in Emalahleni Local Municipality. This visit illustrates the positive impact of the programme within the community.
The interaction will take place at two separate venues. First, the EPWP Road Maintenance Project visit is scheduled for 10:00 am at Indwe Street, near Emalahleni Local Municipality in Lady Frere. Subsequently, a meeting with emerging contractors will be held at 1:00 pm at the Roydon Reserve, Queenstown.
Media representatives are invited to attend both events, offering an opportunity to witness the crucial exchange of ideas and experiences between the Minister, the Eastern Cape MEC, the Executive Mayor, and the emerging contractors.
The event highlights the government’s dedication to engage with the public, ensuring that their voices are heard and their concerns are addressed. The Presidential Imbizo further emphasizes the collaborative nature of governance, wherein various stakeholders work together to find solutions and develop effective, sustainable strategies for the country’s progress.
In conclusion, Minister Sihle Zikalala’s interaction with emerging contractors in Komani signifies a step towards a more inclusive, diverse, and thriving construction industry. By offering opportunities for growth and development through the EPWP Vuk’uphile Contractor Development Programme, the government is actively working to empower women and create a more equitable society. Through continued efforts and collaborations, the construction industry can expect to witness transformative change, contributing to a brighter and more prosperous future for South Africa.
