Empowering Youth through Basketball: The Story of African Grassroot Hoops

A New Take on Basketball in South Africa

African Grassroot Hoops (AGH) is not just any basketball program. Since 2014, the non-profit organization has been using basketball as a tool to empower young individuals and develop their leadership skills. With a focus on underdeveloped areas in Cape Town and surrounding areas, AGH aims to create a safe, fun, and positive environment for young boys and girls to grow and become the best versions of themselves.

Developing Future Leaders through Basketball

AGH believes that basketball is more than just a sport; it’s a symbol of hope, empowerment, and a source of opportunities. By partnering with community basketball enthusiasts, AGH organizes programs and events that provide a platform for upskilling future leaders. The group also works with basketball coaches and players to build a step-by-step curriculum that shows how the game teaches leadership characteristics.

Creating a Positive and Safe Space for Youth

AGH’s events and programs are designed to take young individuals out of their normal environment, providing them with exposure and support necessary to ensure that their leadership qualities can shine. By creating a safe and controlled environment, AGH provides young individuals with a space to have fun, be active, and develop their basketball knowledge and overall well-being.

A Channel for Opportunities

The purpose of AGH is to use basketball as a way to give young and impressionable people in South African communities a sense of power. The organization’s drive is to combat community stressors while having fun, creating a positive and safe space for young individuals to develop leadership skills and achieve their dreams.
