Enhancing Community Safety: Graduation of Peace Officers in Mossel Bay and George

Mossel Bay and George, two municipalities in South Africa, are celebrating the graduation of 23 Peace Officers (POs), who will contribute to the fight against crime and enhance safety within their communities. With an additional 17 officers set to graduate in Hessequa in May 2023, this marks a significant milestone in the Western Cape Safety Plan (WCSP), aimed at reinforcing Municipal Law Enforcement capacity throughout the Western Cape.

The WCSP: Reinforcing Law Enforcement Operations

The WCSP is a program designed to enhance both urban and rural safety while simultaneously combating crime within these communities. With an investment of over R 1,075 million, the WCSP seeks to strengthen law enforcement operations and support existing efforts to maintain safety and security in the region.

Intensive Training for POs

Between March 27 and May 12, 2023, the newly graduated officers underwent intensive training at the Bnei Akiva campsite in Mossel Bay. This rigorous curriculum equipped them with the necessary skills and knowledge pertaining to the roles and functions of a Peace Officer and Traffic Warden.

Topics Covered in the Training Program

The training program covered a wide range of topics, including Law Enforcement and the Constitution, the Constitution of South Africa 108 of 1995, Principles of criminal law and rules of interpretation of law, Outline of the law of criminal procedure, Legislation and the national road traffic act pertaining to traffic wardens, Schedule 1 and 3 offences, Law of Evidence and Criminal courts, Practical: 56 & 341 administrative notices, and Adherence to professional conduct and organizational ethics.

Certification and Employment Opportunities for Graduates

Upon successful completion of the program, graduates were awarded a Safety and Security Sector Education and Training Authority (SASSETA) Certificate. Additionally, they received a 12-month Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) contract/internship within their respective municipalities.

Community Support for POs

The graduation of these Peace Officers not only benefits the graduates themselves but also the communities they will serve. It is essential for the local communities to rally behind and support them. By working together and presenting a united front, significant strides can be made in achieving greater safety for all residents.

A Step Forward in Enhancing Community Safety

The graduation of these Peace Officers marks a crucial step forward in the WCSP’s goal of enhancing safety and security throughout the Western Cape. The dedication and hard work of these new Peace Officers serve as a testament to the potential for positive change within their communities.
