South Africa is a country rich in diversity and cultural experiences that has seen a steady increase in tourism over the years. To ensure the safety of tourists, the government and private sector have collaborated to establish the National Tourism Safety Forum. This forum includes members from various tourism sector bodies, the Department of Tourism, the South African Police, the National Prosecuting Authority, and the Department of Transport.
The primary objective of the Safety Forum is to enhance the visitor experience in South Africa. This focus on safety has paid off, with the nation experiencing a significant increase in tourist arrivals. In the first half of 2023, South Africa recorded over 4 million arrivals, a 78.2% increase compared to 2022. This growth can be attributed to various marketing efforts targeting regions across the globe.
To make South Africa a desirable tourist destination, the government is preparing for the busy summer season by launching a Summer Campaign in the Eastern Cape.
The National Tourism Safety Forum is responsible for coordinating and integrating safety response mechanisms for tourists in distress. The Tourism Action Plan outlines key objectives, including increasing visibility at tourist attractions and training tourism monitors to facilitate integrated implementation and support of safety programs.
One of the significant achievements has been the deployment of tourism monitors by the Department of Tourism. The department has allocated R174.5 million to train over 2,200 Tourism Monitors who will patrol top tourist attractions and national parks across the country. These trained monitors will provide information to tourists, report crime incidents to relevant enforcement agencies, and enhance visitor safety.
The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has introduced the C-More tracking device, which can be integrated into the Secura app. The Tourism Business Council of South Africa developed the app to provide assistance to tourists in various ways, such as roadside assistance and navigation.
The Department of Tourism has developed electronic tourist safety tips, which can be accessed through a QR code. These tips have also been integrated into the MY-SAPS APP, which the South African Police Service is looking to enhance further.
The government is also focusing on Tourism Awareness Campaigns in communities across the country. The aim is to involve communities in understanding the value of tourism and its tangible benefits for their areas.
The continuous efforts and collaborative initiatives of the National Tourism Safety Forum have resulted in effective safety measures and enhanced visitor experiences in South Africa. The nation’s dedication to making South Africa a safe and desirable destination for tourists is evident, and the tourism industry can look forward to thriving in the years to come.
