The event follows the regulations set by the IAAF, Athletics South Africa (ASA) and Western Province Athletics (WPA). In the event that Chapman’s Peak Drive is closed, an alternative route is provided via Ou Kaapse Weg.
The Half Marathon is another popular event of the Two Oceans Marathon, which is equally challenging but shorter. Both events showcase the awe-inspiring beauty of the Cape Peninsula, making them popular among runners from all over the world.
International entrants play a significant role in the Two Oceans Marathon, with the event catering exclusively to them. To participate, runners must qualify through an IAAF (ASA in South Africa) affiliated marathon or a race longer than 42.2 km, officially measured and timed. A sub-5:00 time is required for a 42.2 km qualifying race.
In addition to the primary races, the Two Oceans Marathon offers a variety of fringe races catering to diverse age groups and skill levels, including a kiddies dash, fun run, and trail run. The International Friendship Run, held the day before the primary races, allows international participants to enjoy a scenic 5 km route along the Sea Point promenade.
The Two Oceans Marathon Expo and race pack collection will be held on April 11 and 12 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC). The primary races will start and finish at the University of Cape Town’s rugby fields in Rondebosch. The Ultra Marathon takes place on April 13, and the Half Marathon on April 14.
The Two Oceans Marathon originated as a preparatory race for the Comrades Marathon, another esteemed ultramarathon event in South Africa. The inaugural race took place on May 2, 1970, with only 26 participants. By 1972, it officially acquired the title “Two Oceans Marathon”. In a landmark victory in 1976, Gabashane Vincent Rakabaele emerged as the champion, marking him as the first black athlete to clinch a win in a South African ultramarathon. Fast forward to the early 21st century, the marathon witnessed participation from several thousands of athletes annually. Notably, multiple male and female athletes have secured victories in the Two Oceans Marathon on three or four occasions.
