Former South African national rugby team coach, Jake White, has expressed his willingness to return to the team after the current coach, Jacques Nienaber, leaves his post. Despite White’s success in leading the South African team to victory in the 2007 World Cup, his name has not been mentioned much in connection with the job.
White, who is currently coaching the Bulls until 2027, has stated that he would only consider the job with the blessing of his club’s board, Patrice Motsepe, and Johann Rupert. He has also emphasized the importance of having control over the setup and the necessary resources to run the organization. While he acknowledges that wanting to coach internationally is a natural desire for any coach, he is clear that the right conditions must be in place. White has expressed his admiration for the players he is currently coaching and believes they have the potential to become international players.
White’s Relevance and Popularity in South African Rugby
White’s tenure as Springbok coach was not without controversy. He was dismissed from his post in 2007, despite leading the national team to their historic World Cup victory. Nonetheless, White remains a revered figure in South African rugby, and he has continued to demonstrate his coaching prowess in various teams he has coached, including the Brumbies and Montpellier. Speculation is ripe regarding who will replace Nienaber when he departs from the national team post-World Cup in France. Some have suggested that the role may be shared between a head coach and a director of rugby, which could open up more possibilities for White. Nonetheless, White has been clear that he will not do anything without the approval of the Bulls, and he remains committed to the team. It remains to be seen if the South African Rugby Union will consider White for the role, but many fans and players alike would undoubtedly welcome his return.
