On August 31, 2023, the Community Safety and Education portfolio committees of the Gauteng Legislature will jointly host a session to discuss interventions aimed at restoring safety for learners in schools. This collaborative effort is a response to the growing concern regarding the high levels of crime and violence experienced by learners in schools across the province.
The session will be based on the Focus Intervention Study (FIS), which both committees are currently conducting to assess the effectiveness of current interventions for combating crime at Gauteng schools. The ultimate goal of the session and the study is to develop concrete plans and recommendations that will ensure a safe and secure environment for learners and educators.
The session will involve relevant government departments, law enforcement agencies, academics, researchers, and representatives of the education sector. By bringing together diverse stakeholders, the committees aim to foster a comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach to addressing the pressing issue of safety in and around schools.
The event is scheduled to take place at Emperors Palace in Kempton Park, starting at 14:00 on August 31, 2023. All participants will have the opportunity to provide their insights, suggestions, and concerns in a collaborative setting, promoting open dialogue and fostering a sense of collective responsibility.
The issue of school safety has been a long-standing concern in Gauteng, with a marked increase in criminal activities and violence in recent years. The joint session highlights the commitment of the government and various stakeholders in addressing the challenges faced by the education sector in Gauteng.
By sharing expertise, resources, and perspectives, the participants aim to develop innovative and sustainable solutions to restore safety and security in schools. The engagement session is expected to provide valuable insights into the current state of school safety and the effectiveness of existing interventions.
This information will be crucial in guiding future policy development, resource allocation, and strategic planning for the education sector in the province. The upcoming session on school safety in Gauteng demonstrates the proactive approach taken by the legislature committees and various stakeholders in tackling the pressing issue of crime and violence affecting learners and educators.
Through open dialogue, collaboration, and a multidisciplinary approach, the session promises to be a significant step toward restoring safety in the province’s schools and fostering an environment conducive to learning and development.
