GCIS Hosts Youth Engagement Program to Empower South African Youth through Information

The Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) is organizing a two-day youth engagement program in KaMaqhekeza Township, located in Nkomazi Local Municipality, Mpumalanga province. The event is aimed at empowering South African citizens, especially the youth, by providing them access to government information.

Seminar on Economic and Entrepreneurial Opportunities

The program will kick off with a seminar called “Vuk Talks” at Ehlanzeni TVET College, Mlumati Campus. The session will allow students to engage with professionals and practicing artisans. The seminar will focus on providing information about economic and entrepreneurial opportunities and funding options available in various sectors, including the Industrial Development Corporation.

Significance of the Event

Michael Currin, GCIS Acting Director-General, emphasized the importance of the event. As youth unemployment remains a significant challenge in the country, the government is committed to providing opportunities for young people to support themselves and their families. The GCIS aims to build a network of young people who can drive change in their communities.

Government Exhibition Day

The program will conclude with the Government Exhibition Day, where over 20 government departments and entities will showcase their products and services. The public will have easy access to government information and service offerings designed to improve their lives. The exhibited services include Home Affairs, Unemployment Insurance Fund, South African Social Security Agency, Health, National Youth Development Agency, Legal Aid South Africa, Human Settlements, and Retail Savings Bonds.

Commitment to Ensuring Citizens Have Access to Information

The GCIS is committed to ensuring citizens have access to government information and services in an integrated manner. The department hosts exhibitions quarterly, covering different provinces. As Youth Month approaches, the GCIS aims to include everyone, ensuring that information and services reach people where they are.

Invitation to Journalists

Journalists are invited to attend and interact with speakers and youth at the two events, providing an opportunity for greater exposure to the challenges faced by the youth and the government’s initiatives.

Dates of the Program

The Vuk Talks Youth Seminar will take place on Thursday, 25th May 2023, at Ehlanzeni TVET College, Mlumati Campus, from 9:30 AM to 1:00 PM. The Government Exhibition Day will follow on Friday, 26th May 2023, at Nkomazi Plaza, Ka Maqhekeza, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

The GCIS-led youth engagement program is a significant step towards empowering South African youth. By fostering an environment of learning and growth, the government is demonstrating its commitment to investing in the country’s future.
