The Volunteer Wildfire Services Open Day is finally back after a long two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, and it promises to be bigger and better than ever! This exciting event will take place on December 3, 2022, at the Newlands Fire Base from 9 am to 4 pm, and it is free for the public to attend.
The VWS Open Day is about having fun while raising awareness about wildfires and fynbos. It is an opportunity for the whole family to learn about fire and engage in fun activities while enjoying fantastic shows that include thrilling firefighting displays and demonstrations from the SANParks Honorary Rangers K9 anti-poaching unit, among others.
The Open Day will have something for everyone, including abseiling, fire truck rides, snake displays, face-painting, tug-of-war, and getting up close with firefighting tools and helicopters. You can also explore indoor and outdoor exhibitions and enjoy the famous Open Day foam party.
The Volunteer Wildfire Services is a non-profit volunteer organization that is entirely dedicated to combating wildfires in the Table Mountain National Parks and Overberg. With over 200 volunteers across four stations in Newlands, Stellenbosch, South Peninsula, and Helderberg, the VWS relies on donations from the public and businesses to meet its annual operating costs. Open Day is one of the significant fundraising events that help ensure that the VWS can fight wildfires safely and effectively.
Parents, caregivers, and teachers are encouraged to pre-register children on the Volunteer Wildfire Services website. Registration of children will be compulsory to allow them to take part in the various activities on the day.
While entry is free on the day, donations in aid of fighting wildfires are most welcome. So, invite all your family and friends for a wonderful day out with the kids, and help support the brave people who keep our community safe.
The VWS Open Day is an event that you don’t want to miss. It’s an opportunity to have fun, learn about fire safety, and support a worthy cause. Keep your eyes on the VWS social channels for up-to-date information on parking areas, shuttles, activities, and updates. Then, get ready for an unforgettable day out with the family!
