The Cape Town government and Garden Cities have partnered to provide affordable housing for the city’s residents, with the Greenville Phase 4 project in Fisantekraal, Durbanville, being a notable milestone. The project has recently handed over keys to 28 beneficiaries and aims to complete 1,050 homes for qualified residents and their families by the end of 2025.
The Greenville housing project is unique in its use of alternative building technologies during construction, aiming to explore new and innovative ways to deliver opportunities. Garden Cities has employed both skilled and unskilled labor from the community, with the use of the Benex Block, a lightweight building block that facilitates and simplifies the installation process.
The City of Cape Town follows its Housing Allocation Policy and Housing Needs Register to ensure fairness and transparency in beneficiary selection, preventing queue jumping and ensuring housing opportunities are only granted to those who qualify according to South African legislation. The City’s political office bearers do not have access to or influence over the Register and its qualifying beneficiaries.
Residents are urged to report any illegal activities through anonymous tip-offs. They can call 112 from a cellphone (toll-free), 107 from a landline, or 021 480 7700 for emergencies.
The Greenville housing project demonstrates the City’s unshakable commitment to building hope by providing opportunities for its residents. As more beneficiaries settle into their new homes, the project will continue to serve as a shining example of what can be achieved through collaboration, creativity, and commitment. Alderman James Vos expressed his gratitude to the staff, contractors, and partners for enabling the handover and looks forward to many more residents moving into their new homes.
