The 15th BRICS Summit, held in Sandton, South Africa, marked a significant moment for the five member countries—Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. The event provided an exceptional opportunity for participating nations to strengthen political and economic ties, in addition to creating a sense of solidarity. Amidst the summit, H.E. Humile Mashatile, Spouse of the Deputy President of South Africa, hosted a Spousal Luncheon that highlighted the deep roots of South African heritage and sisterhood.
The Cradle of Humanity, South Africa, is a country with a rich history and vibrant culture. The summit and the Spousal Luncheon offered a platform for the First Ladies and Spouses of Heads of State to connect with this essence and recognize the importance of their roles in shaping a better future for the next generation.
The Luncheon’s host, H.E. Humile Mashatile, expressed gratitude to the organizing team for ensuring the event’s success. She also extended a warm welcome to the attendees, specifically acknowledging the First Lady of South Africa and “Mother of the Nation,” Dr. Tshepo Motsepe, for her graciousness and guidance. Mashatile referred to Motsepe as “isikhukukazi,” a South African term that embodies the qualities of a nurturer, protector, teacher, and leader.
During the Luncheon, Mashatile celebrated the efforts of female leaders in South Africa, marking the month as Women’s Month. Dr. Tshepo Motsepe, a champion of quality early childhood education through her Early Care Foundation, was celebrated for her contributions to positively influencing the lives of young children and shaping their future prospects.
To commemorate the contributions of women in South African history, the nation observes Women’s Day on August 9th, honoring the sacrifices made by thousands of women who fought against colonialism and apartheid. Mashatile hailed Motsepe as a descendant of these brave women, carrying forth their legacy to create a more just and equal society.
Mashatile encouraged attendees to visit the Women’s Living Heritage Monument in Pretoria and the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site near Johannesburg. These sites serve as a reminder of the unity of the human race and the common African ancestry that binds everyone together.
The XV BRICS Summit Spousal Luncheon was not only a celebration of the power of female leadership but also a testament to the spirit of collaboration and growth among the BRICS countries. The event highlighted the importance of investing in the next generation, promoting education and development, and fostering unity in the face of adversity. Through the words and actions of leaders like H.E. Humile Mashatile, the world takes one step closer to realizing the dream of a more humane and equal society.
