Honoring Exceptional Achievements: South Africa’s National Orders

South Africa’s National Orders are the highest form of recognition bestowed upon citizens and eminent foreign nationals for exceptional service to the nation. As the deadline for nominations approaches, the Presidency invites South Africans and global citizens to identify those who have made significant contributions to various aspects of national life.

Six Distinct Awards

National Orders encompass six distinct awards that recognize unparalleled achievements in diverse fields such as science, medicine, technology, democracy, human rights, arts, culture, and sports. The awards honor acts of bravery and dedication that go above and beyond the ordinary call of duty.

The President and Advisory Council on National Orders

The President is responsible for bestowing these Orders and Decorations with the assistance of the Chancellor of National Orders, Ms. Phindile Baleni, and the Advisory Council on National Orders. The institution of National Orders promotes social cohesion and nation-building, reflecting the inclusiveness, integrity, and diversity that South Africa strives for.

Call for Nominations

Ms. Baleni urges citizens to nominate deserving individuals, emphasizing that National Orders offer an annual opportunity to express gratitude and inspiration for those who have shaped South Africa’s history and future. The nomination process encourages individuals from all backgrounds, including the country’s youth, to identify exceptional people from their communities and sectors.

Non-Racial and Non-Sexist Democracy

The establishment of a non-racial and non-sexist democracy in 1994 led to a review of the system of National Orders. The current structure was progressively instituted in 2002 and 2003, following recommendations by the President’s Advisory Council on National Orders.

Prestigious Awards

Among the prestigious awards, the Order of Mapungubwe honors South African citizens for excellence and exceptional achievements, while the Order of the Baobab recognizes distinguished service in business, economy, science, medicine, technology, and community service. The Order of the Companions of OR Tambo celebrates foreign nationals and dignitaries who have demonstrated friendship and solidarity with South Africa, fostering peace and cooperation.

Contributions to Democracy, Human Rights, and Peace

The Order of Luthuli is granted to individuals who have made meaningful contributions to democracy, human rights, nation-building, justice, peace, and conflict resolution. In the realm of arts and culture, the Order of Ikhamanga acknowledges South African citizens who have excelled in fields such as arts, culture, literature, music, journalism, and sports. Lastly, the Mendi Decoration for Bravery is awarded to those who have performed extraordinary acts of bravery, risking their lives, or saving the lives of others.

Nomination Process

The nomination process is straightforward, with nomination forms available for download from the Presidency’s official website. Submissions require an introductory paragraph summarizing the nominee’s achievements, a list of exceptional milestones in their career or international arena, and a description of outstanding service or act of bravery. The deadline for nominations is August 31, 2023.

In conclusion, South Africa’s National Orders represent an essential part of the country’s rich tapestry, honoring those who have made a lasting impact on the nation’s diverse aspects. Through these awards, South Africa not only recognizes individual accomplishments, but also celebrates the collective spirit that binds the nation together.
