Honoring the Legacy of Councillor Fikile Alfred Jakeni

The North West Provincial Legislature extends its condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the late Councillor Fikile Alfred Jakeni, who passed away on June 1, 2023, after a short illness. Honorable Basetsana R. S. Dantjie, the Speaker of the North West Provincial Legislature, conveyed her sympathies on behalf of the Provincial Speaker’s Forum.

A Leader in Local Government

Cllr Jakeni had been serving as the Speaker of Ditsobotla Local Municipality at the time of his passing. He was elected to this position in the December 2022 bi-elections in Ditsobotla. As a respected leader in local government, the Speakers’ Forum sought his insights on issues affecting municipalities in the province, with the aim of improving the lives of citizens.

Remembering a Legacy of Public Service

Cllr Jakeni’s commitment to public service dates back to the 1990s when he was a prominent activist for the Congress of South African Students Organisation (COSAS). He held various leadership roles within the African National Congress, ANC Youth League, and South African Municipal Workers Union. His unwavering dedication to improving local communities made an indelible impression on those around him.

A Loss Felt by Many

Cllr Jakeni’s passing is felt deeply by the people of Bokone Bophirima and the entire North West province. Hon. Speaker Dantjie expressed her condolences, saying, “Our heartfelt sympathies go to his family, friends, comrades, and the people of the North West. May we find comfort in the Lord during this difficult time.”
