K-9 Unit in Mossel Bay: Enhancing Security Measures in Western Cape
The Mossel Bay K-9 unit, composed of four expertly trained Belgian Malinois dogs and their skilled handlers, is a significant addition to the Western Cape Government’s K-9 units, designed to confront and counteract crime and illicit activities in their respective jurisdictions. With a formidable support budget of over R19 million, the K-9 units have already made tangible progress in ensuring a safer Western Cape.
On the 21st of November, 2023, the historic town of Mossel Bay, nestled along South Africa’s Garden Route, earned media attention when its recently established K-9 unit officially got the green light to commence an aggressive campaign against illegal activities. This event represented a notable progression in the Western Cape Government’s (WCG) relentless endeavour to strengthen security measures and instil a feeling of safety among the inhabitants of the province.
The Mossel Bay K-9 unit, initiated in July 2022, is composed of a meticulous team of four expertly trained Belgian Malinois dogs and their skilled handlers. These dogs are celebrated for their specialized proficiency in identifying narcotics, firearms, ammunition, and even threatened species. They represent a significant addition to the already existing K-9 units that the WCG operates, with the other two located in the Overstrand and Swartland municipalities.
With the backing of a formidable support budget totalling over R19 million for the current fiscal year, the units are prepared to confront and counteract the waves of crime and illicit activities in their respective jurisdictions. The Mossel Bay K-9 unit has particularly showcased its efficacy shortly after its initiation, facilitating the arrest of two individuals and the seizure of mandrax tablets and ‘tik’, a regional form of crystal methamphetamine, during their first roadblock operation.
Reagen Allen, Western Cape Minister of Police Discipline and Community Safety, recognized the significance of the new K-9 unit’s inception as a clear indication of the WCG’s commitment to fostering safety throughout the province. He praised the unit for its prompt action and tangible results, indicating a promising future in the battle against criminal activities.
The success of the initiative is further underpinned by the extraordinary efforts of the Overstrand and Swartland K-9 units. They have demonstrated the power of collaboration by working alongside Rural Safety Units (RSUs) and the South African Police Service (SAPS). Their combined efforts have resulted in the arrest of fifteen individuals for various crimes from 13 to 19 November 2023 alone.
In the Swartland municipality, operations carried out in Malmesbury and Moorreesburg led to an arrest for drug possession, along with the capture of a packet of tik and a partial mandrax tablet. Meanwhile, the Overstrand unit made significant inroads with the arrest of seven wanted suspects, two individuals for drug possession, two for dealing in liquor, and one for possessing West Coast Rock Lobster (WCRL), a protected species. Additionally, a considerable quantity of WCRL tails and a significant amount of tik were seized.
Minister Allen highlighted the persistent efforts of these units in disrupting criminal activities in their respective areas. He pointed to recent crime statistics as proof of the instrumental role these units play in ensuring a safer Western Cape. Despite the absence of support from the national government, the WCG remains steadfast in its commitment to providing these crucial units with the necessary resources to be effective in their crime prevention efforts.
Finally, Minister Allen underlined the crucial role of community cooperation and solidarity in tackling crime, sending a powerful message to criminals about the community’s determination to eliminate illicit activities. As the WCG continues its mission to create a safer and more secure Western Cape, residents can take comfort in the dedicated commitment of the K-9 units to their protection.
