The Department of Water and Sanitation’s Bursary Program

The Department of Water and Sanitation awarded Komane a bursary that covered his B-Tech degree and Masters. The bursary covered full tuition fees, accommodation, food, books, stationery allowance, and a monthly stipend. Komane is grateful for the support and believes that it significantly impacted his life and enabled him to achieve what would have otherwise been unattainable.

Making a Difference with the Department of Water and Sanitation

Now an intern at the Department, Komane passionately contributes to the Blue and Green Drop Certification Programme, where he assesses water quality and treats wastewater. He is also part of a team working on solutions to address the Hartebeesport Dam hyacinth problem. In his own time, he offers free tutoring for chemistry classes to university students.

The Learning Academy: Addressing the Skills Gap in the Sector

The Department of Water and Sanitation established the Learning Academy in 2007 to address the specific scarce and technical skills gap in the sector. The Academy offers study bursaries in science and engineering disciplines and collaborates with all universities in the country. The bursars are provided with opportunities to complete their studies successfully. These students are then provided with employment contracts, workplace exposure, and additional training until they are ready to register as professionals with their respective professional bodies.

Inspiring the Next Generation

Komane’s impressive work ethic and commitment to uplifting the next generation of young professionals have not gone unnoticed. Susan Andrews, the program coordinator of the Learning Academy, praises his efforts, stating that Komane is grounded and will break many barriers in the future. Komane’s ultimate goal is to inspire confidence among the younger generation and encourage black children to boldly pursue opportunities in the chemistry field, fulfilling their dreams.

The Transformative Power of Education and Bursary Programs

Kagiso Komane’s story is an inspiring example of the transformative power of education and the role of bursary programs in shaping the lives of young aspirants. The Department of Water and Sanitation’s Learning Academy plays a pivotal role in nurturing talent and providing much-needed support.
