South African tennis star Kevin Anderson is set to make a remarkable return to professional tennis at the Newport ATP 250, thanks to a wild card awarded to the seven-time ATP Tour titlist. Anderson, who retired last year, boasts an illustrious career, having peaked at No. 5 in the ATP Rankings.
Anderson’s last title win was at the Newport tournament in 2021, a fitting venue for his comeback. In an interview with the ATP Tour, Anderson expressed his excitement for the comeback, stating that he is thrilled to make his return to the Tour in Newport.
Anderson’s career highlights include reaching two Grand Slam finals and qualifying for the ATP Finals in 2018, where he made it to the semi-finals. At 32 years old, he became the fifth player to attain Top 5 status after turning 30.
Reflecting on his retirement, Anderson shared that he was dealing with a lot of physical pain, which made it difficult for him to compete the way he wanted to. However, a couple of months ago, he started hitting again and truly enjoyed being out there. His body felt much better, and he was excited about what he was doing with the tennis ball, which made him want to challenge himself again.
Anderson considers himself fortunate to have the opportunity to return to the game, stating that he didn’t know if he would have the chance, but Newport has given him one, and he wants to go out there and play again. After the Newport ATP 250, Anderson aims to participate in more tournaments.
The Newport ATP 250 will feature notable players such as four-time champion John Isner, defending champion Maxime Cressy, world No. 15 Tommy Paul, and Mallorca champion Christopher Eubanks.
Anderson’s remarkable comeback is a testament to his resilience and passion for the game. The tennis world eagerly awaits his return as he steps back onto the grass court, ready to embark on a new chapter in his impressive career.
