Section 1: Unveiling of the NSFAS Bursary Program

In an epoch-making event held at the GCIS, Tshedimosetso House, Pretoria, Prof Blade Nzimande, the Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Innovation, declared the initiation of the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) bursary application for the academic year 2024. This unveiling stands as a significant stride towards offering financial support to deserving aspirants.

Incepted under the NSFAS Act (Act No. 1 of 1999), the NSFAS took shape with the sole purpose of funding deserving scholars yearning for post-school education. The scheme is a product of the government’s unyielding endeavors to eradicate the persistent social inequality in educational accessibility – a problem deeply rooted in the country’s history of colonial and apartheid rule.

The NSFAS has demonstrated significant expansion since its inaugural year in 1991, with the disbursed amount rocketing from R21.4 million to nearly R48 billion. This substantial increase in funding has enabled numerous underprivileged and working-class children to pursue higher studies in public universities and TVET colleges. This momentous growth underlines the government’s dedication to prioritizing student funding and expanding accessibility to higher education for those who traditionally lacked such opportunities.

Section 2: Evolution of the NSFAS and Launch of the Application Period

An important achievement for the NSFAS was amalgamating all public universities and TVET colleges into the student-centred model. This model permits students to apply directly to the NSFAS for funding. Currently, the scheme is financing a whopping 1.6 million students, a figure reached due to a significant influx in the number of applications received.

The application cycle for the NSFAS bursary program for the academic year 2024 has been formally launched and will conclude on January 31, 2024. The early application period is structured to expedite decision-making processes and coincides with the NSFAS financial eligibility assessment that necessitates updated SARS information.

The NSFAS has improved its application procedure by forging third-party alliances with organizations such as SASSA, SARS, and the Department of Home Affairs. These bodies provide the NSFAS with data to authenticate the student’s stated information in the application, thus eliminating the need for additional documents at the time of application unless parental relationship verification is needed.

Section 3: Preparing for the 2024 Funding Cycle and Emphasizing Timeliness

In readiness for the 2024 funding cycle, NSFAS has partnered with the Department of Basic Education (DBE). The scheme discovered that a large proportion of matriculating students are beneficiaries of SASSA. These students are encouraged to apply for the bursary scheme, as they would be immediately funded.

Despite various hurdles, the NSFAS persistently works towards enhancing its systems and operations. As part of its digital strategy, the scheme has upgraded its student application portal, introduced a mobile app, and intends to implement a strategy to improve its query handling processes. These digital advancements will offer students self-service options, decrease the dependency on calls, and enable students to receive direct responses.

Looking forward to the future, it’s crucial to note that the comprehensive Student Funding Model is in the final approval stages by the Cabinet. More specifics about this significant progression will be disclosed soon.

In conclusion, I want to emphasize the significance of timeliness. Prospective young scholars looking to join our public TVET colleges and universities from 2024 should utilize the online application system and other access points to apply for funding on time.

Our commitment, along with my department, is to cooperate closely with the NSFAS Board, the NSFAS team, public universities, and TVET colleges to enhance the efficacy of our student funding system. We extend our gratitude to our state organs, including SARS, SASSA, the Department of Basic Education, and the Department of Home Affairs, for their constant support to NSFAS to ensure funding for all deserving students.

This endeavor warrants the collaborative effort of all stakeholders, labouring relentlessly behind the scenes, to ensure the success of our future leaders. United, we can make this happen!
