On the 6th of May 2023, Linda Thompson, a resident of Cape Town, joined an elite group of twelve swimmers who have successfully swum the 33km stretch from Rooi Els to Miller’s Point across False Bay without a wetsuit. The swim is notoriously challenging due to its unpredictable weather and strong currents, and only a few seasoned open-water swimmers have managed to complete it.
Thompson swam for eleven hours, twenty-eight minutes, and five seconds. Numerous swimmers were captivated by her voyage as they tracked it on their phones. When discussing the mental concentration required for such a feat, Thompson revealed, “I was only focused on the physical and mental concentration of swimming, I was in the zone.”
Swimming in open water requires tremendous endurance and physical stamina. Long periods of time are spent navigating fluctuating conditions such as waves, currents, and varying water temperatures. Big Bay Events’ captain Derrick Frazer led Thompson across the expanse and insured her safety.
Thompson’s success was a result of teamwork. She emphasized the contributions of her physiotherapist, pilates instructor, swimming community, and friends, who collectively made her dream a reality. She followed a strict pattern of swimming for 45-minute intervals, punctuated with whistles from her coach and water bottle tosses from her friend, Katherine.
Despite encountering difficulties such as jellyfish stings, queasiness, and exhaustion, Thompson remained steadfast and drew from her physical and mental strength. Her determination and passion for swimming allowed her to overcome these obstacles and inch closer to her goal.
In addition to the physical and mental challenges, Thompson had to overcome the fear of sharks that inhabit the waters of False Bay. Despite the potential threat, she remained focused and trusted her support team to ensure her safety, highlighting the importance of teamwork in her achievement.
Thompson’s swim across False Bay stands as a testament to her perseverance and the power of teamwork. It is an inspiration for swimmers and non-swimmers alike, proving that with dedication and support, even the most daunting challenges can be conquered.
Thompson’s accomplishment is not just for her but for those who aspire to overcome their limitations and achieve greatness. As more individuals attempt to conquer seemingly insurmountable challenges, they inspire others to believe in themselves and the power of perseverance.
The swim across False Bay by Linda Thompson is a shining example of what can be accomplished when one is determined, concentrated, and backed by a devoted team. Her extraordinary voyage will undoubtedly inspire others to stretch their limits and pursue success in their chosen endeavors.
