The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) has organized a Men’s Engagement Session to take place in Lusikisiki, Eastern Cape Province, on August 19, 2023. The aim of the session is to address the high rate of crimes committed against women and children, including sexual assaults, rape cases, and other forms of gender-based violence in the area.
The decision to hold the Men’s Engagement Session is in response to a community imbizo held on July 12, 2023. During the imbizo, concerns were raised about the abuse faced by women at the hands of men in the region, and the inadequate response of law enforcement agencies.
The National Commissioner for Correctional Services, Mr. Makgothi Samuel Thobakgale, made a commitment to address men in the Lusikisiki area. This Men’s Engagement Session is a concrete step towards fulfilling that commitment by bringing together various stakeholders, including the National House of Traditional and Khoi San Leaders, the National Prosecuting Authority, South African Police Service, Department of Social Development, and Heads of Initiation Schools, among others.
The Men’s Engagement Session will take place at the Assemblies of God in Lusikisiki, starting at 9 am. Members of the media have been invited to attend and cover the event to ensure transparency and increase public awareness of the initiative. Mocheta Monama has been appointed as the contact person for media confirmations.
The Men’s Engagement Session aims to create a collective effort to address the root causes of gender-based violence and devise effective strategies to tackle this social ill by involving various stakeholders from the community, law enforcement, and government departments. The inclusion of the National House of Traditional and Khoi San Leaders underscores the significance of incorporating cultural and traditional perspectives in the fight against gender-based violence.
Education and awareness play a crucial role in changing societal attitudes and behaviors. Initiatives like the Men’s Engagement Session facilitate an exchange of ideas, strategies, and best practices that can contribute to a safer, more equitable society for all.
The Men’s Engagement Session in Lusikisiki is a vital step in addressing the pressing issue of gender-based violence in the region. Through a collective approach involving government agencies, law enforcement, traditional leaders, and community members, this initiative seeks to eradicate the appalling abuse faced by women and children at the hands of men. As citizens, let us join in solidarity and support this initiative, as well as others like it, in our ongoing quest to create a more just and equitable society.
