Memories of Hermanus

As I sit here reflecting on my time in Hermanus, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia wash over me. This small coastal town on the edge of Walker Bay offers exciting experiences, from whale watching to kayaking, hiking, and exploring the world’s most diverse floral kingdom. It’s the perfect blend of natural beauty and adventure, and its rich history is on full display for all to see.

Whale Watching and Sea Kayaking

One of my fondest memories of Hermanus was the breathtaking experience of whale watching. Southern right whales make a stop in Hermanus between June and mid-December, and seeing these majestic creatures up close was indeed an unforgettable experience. But it’s not just about seeing whales from afar. Sea kayaking in Walker Bay was another way to get up close and personal with the marine life along Hermanus’ coastline. The rugged sea cliffs and breathtaking mountain views make it a must-do activity for any adventurer.

Fatbiking and Rock Art

The Old Harbour Museum shows that Hermanus also has much history to offer. Visitors can learn about fishing in the past, see the “bokkom” stands where fish was dried, and even look at glass pictures taken by the famous photographer TD Ravenscroft. It’s an exciting look at the town’s history, and the trophies of local fisherman Bill Sherkirk, who in 1922 caught the world’s most giant man-eating shark with a rod and reel, are a sight to behold. The Bouchard Finlayson Winery has a lot of different ways to pair wine, macarons, and chocolate for a more relaxing experience. The views of the valley are beautiful, and it’s the perfect place to relax and take in Hermanus’s beauty.
