Minister Joe Phaahla Unveils New Health Ombud in South Africa

The Ministry of Health in South Africa is undergoing a significant change, as Minister Dr. Joe Phaahla prepares to announce the new Health Ombud on June 2, 2023. This appointment follows the conclusion of the previous Health Ombud‘s term, Prof Malekgapuru Makgoba, on May 31, 2023.

The Role of the Health Ombud

Established under the National Health Amendment Act of 2013, the Health Ombud is an independent entity tasked with protecting and promoting the well-being and safety of health service users. Their responsibility involves investigating and addressing complaints related to non-compliance with prescribed norms and standards within the national health system.

The New Health Ombud

The incoming Health Ombud will serve a non-renewable term of seven years, following in the footsteps of their predecessor. Prof Makgoba’s tenure was marked by significant strides in enhancing the health sector, and Minister Phaahla will reflect on these achievements during the announcement.

The Announcement

The announcement will take place at a media briefing scheduled for 10:00 AM on June 2, 2023, at Tshedimosetso House in Pretoria. Members of the media will be present to disseminate the news to the public.

Media Inquiries

For media inquiries, interested parties can contact Mr. Foster Mohale, the Health Departmental Spokesperson, and Mr. Doctor Tshwale, the Spokesperson for the Health Minister, via their respective email addresses and phone numbers.

Significance of the Appointment

The appointment of a new Health Ombud signifies South Africa’s commitment to upholding quality health services and improving the lives of its citizens. The incoming Health Ombud faces numerous challenges, but their appointment represents a continued effort to build upon the progress made by their predecessor.

The role of the Health Ombud is crucial in ensuring that the nation’s health system remains accountable and adheres to the highest standards. By actively addressing concerns and complaints, the Ombud can significantly contribute to the betterment of healthcare for all South Africans. The legacy left behind by Prof Makgoba sets a high bar for the incoming Ombud to follow, and the nation eagerly awaits the announcement of their new Health Ombud on June 2, 2023.
