Minister Khumbudzo Ntshavheni and The Presidency Budget Vote 2023/24: Reflecting on Progress and Challenges

Celebrating Africa Day on May 25th, South Africans took the opportunity to reflect on the progress made and the challenges faced in the past year. This coincided with the anniversary of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s inauguration, during a time of global turbulence caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The President’s role in advocating for vaccine equity and boosting the economy has been pivotal.

The Presidency’s Impact in Driving Transformative Initiatives

As the Sixth Administration’s final year commences, it is important to reflect on the progress made, the challenges faced, and the impact that The Presidency had in driving transformative initiatives. The Presidency has been an essential force in shaping South Africa’s trajectory, providing strategic leadership and coordination across all sectors.

The Presidency’s Budget

For the 2023/2024 financial year, The Presidency is tabling a budget of R 625,1 million. The budget aims to address the challenges facing the nation while bolstering internal capacity, fostering economic growth, and promoting social cohesion. With a focus on digital transformation, The Presidency will monitor the implementation of State of the Nation Address commitments and streamline the adoption of technology to enhance service delivery.

Operation Vulindlela

Operation Vulindlela is an ambitious project aimed at implementing priority structural reforms. So far, 11 reforms have been completed, and 14 more are on track for completion. The reforms include the establishment of the National Transmission Company of South Africa (NTCSA) and the expansion of third-party access to the rail network.

Building Practical Partnerships

The Presidency’s approach has involved building practical partnerships with various sectors of society and the international community. For example, President Ramaphosa has held discussions with the steel manufacturing and logistics sectors to foster collaboration and address industry-specific challenges.

Community Engagement

Community engagement has also been critical for The Presidency, with the District Development Model Presidential Izimbizo providing a platform for dialogue between civil society organizations, community leaders, and citizens. This has fostered trust, promoted accountability, and empowered people to actively participate in shaping the nation’s future.

Combating Corruption

In the fight against corruption, The Presidency has implemented measures to combat graft, strengthen law enforcement agencies, and promote ethical behavior within the public sector. Lifestyle audits for officials have been introduced, and partnerships with the private sector are being discussed to further the battle against corruption.

Infrastructure Investments

The Presidency has overseen significant infrastructure investments in water and sanitation, roads, and human settlements. This has included R42,6 billion for the construction, upgrading, and maintenance of national and provincial road networks and a budget allocation of R40 billion for water and sanitation projects.

Tackling Crime and Promoting Good Governance

Tackling crime and promoting good governance have also been high on the agenda. Efforts have been made to increase visible policing and establish community structures to combat criminal activity. Additionally, The Presidency has been committed to upholding transparency, accountability, and the rule of law.
