Minister Lindiwe Zulu’s Solar Power and Mobile Library Initiative in Cape Town

South Africa struggles to meet its energy demands, resulting in socio-economic hardships, especially for vulnerable groups. Nevertheless, the government has been working with international partners to find solutions. One such effort is the recent handover of a 13,650 kW solar power system and mobile library by Minister of Social Development, Ms Lindiwe Zulu.

Solar Power System

The collaboration between the South African government and the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA) aims to address the country’s energy crisis and improve access to basic services for vulnerable communities. On June 7th, Minister Zulu, along with the Turkish H.E. Madam Ambassador Ayşegül KANDAŞ, handed over the solar power system to the Beit-ul-Aman Old Age Home in Wynberg. The solar power system will reduce the home’s reliance on the national grid, minimize electrical costs, and mitigate the risks associated with load shedding.

Mobile Library

The Minister and the Ambassador proceeded to Gugulethu, where they handed over a mobile library to Siviwe School of Skills, catering to the educational needs of learners in the area. The mobile library includes 200 books and a smart TV system. This initiative is a testament to the importance of promoting knowledge and literacy in a rapidly evolving world.

TIKA’s Support

Turkey’s TIKA has a history of supporting South African development through various programs, including providing women entrepreneurship training programs, setting up a science laboratory, and renovating and refurbishing hairdressing and beauty workshops. TIKA’s efforts have not only been concentrated on South Africa but have also extended to the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region.

Handover Events

The handover events for the solar power system and mobile library took place at two different venues. The first was at the Beytul Aman Old Age Home in Wynberg, Cape Town, where the solar power system was presented. The second event took place at the Siviwe School of Skills in Gugulethu, Cape Town, where the mobile library was given to the community.

Collaboration for Positive Change

This initiative is a reflection of the government’s commitment to addressing the energy challenges faced by South Africans and a showcase of the power of international collaboration in solving global issues. The partnership between South Africa and Turkey demonstrates how countries can effectively work together to improve the living conditions of vulnerable communities, providing them with access to essential services and a brighter future.

Impact

The efforts of Minister Zulu, the Turkish Ambassador, and various supporting organizations have touched the lives of many in Wynberg and Gugulethu. The solar power system installation at the Beit-ul-Aman Old Age Home will ensure reliable energy for its residents, while the mobile library at Siviwe School of Skills will contribute to a more educated and empowered youth.

This initiative is a reminder that, amidst the challenges faced by developing nations, collaboration and determination can bring about positive change. The solar power system and mobile library handover is a significant step towards a sustainable future for South Africa and an inspiration to other countries facing similar challenges.
