Minister Senzo Mchunu Pushes for Reconfiguration of Umgeni and Mhlathuze Water

To improve the provision of bulk water in KwaZulu-Natal province, Senzo Mchunu, Minister for the Department of Water and Sanitation, is spearheading the reconfiguration of Umgeni and Mhlathuze Water. The aim of this transformative partnership is to create a single organization, uMngeni – uThukela Water, that will streamline operations and deliver better services.

Integration of Mhlathuze Water into Umgeni Water

According to Section 46 of the Water Services Act of 1997 (Act No. 108 of 1997), Mhlathuze Water’s operations will cease by 30 June 2023. Afterward, its assets, liabilities, and staff will be integrated into Umgeni Water. This move is part of the Department of Water and Sanitation’s plan to create a single water entity for each province.

Call for Nominations

The public notice for nominations to serve on the uMngeni – uThukela Water Board has been issued. The selected members will provide non-executive oversight and support to the executive management to deliver value-added services and business confidence. The interim Board of Umgeni Water will oversee the governance of uMngeni – uThukela Water until a new Board is appointed on 01 July 2023.

Nomination and Application Process

The nomination and application process for public nominations is now open. Interested individuals can submit their electronic applications to boardnominations2023@umgeni.co.za or hand-deliver them to 310 Burgers Street, Pietrmaritzburg 3200. The Acting Chief Executive of uMngeni-uThukela Water, Dr. Sipho Manana, will be handling the applications.

Minister Mchunu’s Dedication

Minister Mchunu has expressed his dedication to improving the provision of water in the province and the country as a whole. He expressed his gratitude to the outgoing Mhlathuze interim Board and looked forward to working with the new Board members. He also emphasized the importance of appointing knowledgeable individuals with expertise in the sector rather than focusing solely on personal gain.
