Minister Senzo Mchunu’s Visit to Ladysmith: A Prelude to the Presidential District Development Model Service Delivery Outreach Programme

Minister of Water and Sanitation, Senzo Mchunu, along with Deputy Ministers David Mahlobo and Judith Tshabalala, visited Ladysmith in advance of the Presidential District Development Model (DDM) service delivery outreach programme scheduled for 9th June 2023. The purpose of the visit, which took place on 2nd June, was to evaluate the current state of the district’s water supply and sanitation services.

Water Security in uThukela District

The uThukela District in KwaZulu-Natal is currently facing a water security crisis, with residents experiencing low to no water supplies. The situation is compounded by ageing infrastructure and the continuous vandalism of crucial facilities, which has led to a pressing concern for the district.

In response to these issues, Minister Mchunu held multiple meetings with the uThukela District Municipality leadership to strategize on improving the existing water and sanitation services. Collaboration and cooperation remain key to unlocking the district’s potential and ensuring a better quality of life for its inhabitants.

Working Together to Provide Water and Sanitation Services

Earlier in 2023, Minister Mchunu met with the mayors of uThukela, uMzinyathi, Amajuba district, and Newcastle local municipalities to discuss necessary interventions and ways to work together in providing water and sanitation services to the people. This collaboration is crucial to ensure that the residents of the uThukela District have access to basic services.

Update on Progress

Minister Mchunu’s visit to Mhlumayo in Ladysmith served as an opportunity to update the community on the outcomes of these engagements. The visit offered a promising glimpse of the district’s future, showcasing the progress made during the ministerial delegation and uThukela district discussions.

The community of Mhlumayo eagerly awaits the Presidential DDM service delivery outreach programme, which aims to improve the lives of the people in the uThukela District of KwaZulu-Natal. The visit from Minister Mchunu and his delegation helps set the stage for the programme, with a stronger focus on water security and sanitation services at the forefront.
