Focus on Municipal Boundary Redeterminations and Amalgamations

One of the primary issues discussed during the meeting was the status of municipal boundary redeterminations and amalgamations for the period of 2022-2024, which has received over 24,000 submissions thus far. The Board also proposed a collaborative partnership with CoGTA on research and development to identify and create new municipalities, particularly in areas with potential economic growth.

Minister Nkadimeng’s Support for Collaborative Task Team

Minister Nkadimeng expressed her appreciation for the information provided by the Municipal Demarcation Board and their collaboration in the field of research and development. She suggested that the Board form a task team together with CoGTA to address these critical matters.

Emphasizing the need to respect the independence and authority of the MDB, Minister Nkadimeng reiterated the Department’s commitment to support the Board in executing its functions. This collaboration will involve working closely with provincial authorities to ensure effective implementation.

Benefits of Collaborative Task Team

The proposed task team would enable the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs to pool resources and expertise with the Municipal Demarcation Board, streamlining efforts towards the development of new municipalities. This collaboration is particularly crucial in fostering economic activities and growth in newly identified areas, ensuring a more efficient and coordinated approach between the two entities.

The initiative highlights the growing need for collaboration between various government departments and independent authorities, as they work together to address pressing issues and enhance the overall development of the country. The partnership between CoGTA and the MDB stands as an example for other government departments, demonstrating the benefits of inter-departmental collaboration in addressing the complex challenges faced by the nation.

The recent meeting between Minister Nkadimeng and the Chairperson of the Municipal Demarcation Board marks an important step forward in fostering cooperation and collaboration between government entities. The proposed task team on research and development is a testament to the shared commitment of both organizations to work towards the betterment of South Africa’s municipalities and the country as a whole.
