The Motheo Innovation Centre was inaugurated on June 30th, 2023, in Centurion, Pretoria, as a testament to South Africa’s commitment to empowering the youth, women, and Small, Medium, and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs). The Centre, established through the collaboration of the State Information Technology Agency (SITA) and Software AG, is a beacon of hope for South African entrepreneurs seeking to harness the power of technology for sustainable growth.
At the heart of the Motheo Innovation Centre’s mission is the Digitech platform, an innovative digital marketplace that showcases locally developed digital products. Its aim is to create a conducive environment for SMMEs, accelerating economic growth, enhancing efficiency, and empowering the backbone of the South African economy. The platform offers a solution to the challenges facing SMMEs, including limited access to resources, market barriers, and bureaucratic hurdles.
The Motheo Innovation Centre plays a pivotal role in South Africa’s broader digital transformation strategy. By partnering with Software AG and other collaborators, the SITA Innovation Centre aims to nurture a new generation of entrepreneurs and innovators who will be headlined as national and global success stories. The Centre’s vision transcends digital infrastructure to cultivate a dynamic culture that drives progress, development, growth, and evolution in the ICT landscape.
As the world embraces the Fourth Industrial Revolution, the Motheo Innovation Centre empowers the youth, particularly through its focus on technology. The Centre gives the youth a sense of purpose and enables them to avoid social ills that threaten their future. The Centre’s impact on the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sector should not be underestimated. By embracing technology, the youth can find a meaningful purpose and steer clear of the social ills that threaten their future.
The Department of Communications and Digital Technologies is targeting 80% connectivity by 2024, with an aim to connect 1,000 Wi-Fi hotspots by December 2023, enabling connectivity for 200,000 households. The government also plans to connect 1,858 government offices and 1,200 schools. The National Broadband Project, valued at around R6 billion, will be launched to complement the SA Connect programme.
The Motheo Innovation Centre stands as a symbol of hope and a catalyst for change in South Africa’s digital transformation journey. By equipping the youth, women, and SMMEs with the tools necessary to succeed in the digital era, the Centre is shaping the future of the nation and paving the way for a more prosperous and inclusive South Africa.
