MyCiTi Bus Service to Connect Ottery Road with Link Road

The City of Cape Town is preparing to host a public event on the upcoming MyCiTi construction along Govan Mbeki Road. The event will take place on 12th September 2023 at the Fezeka Council Chambers in Gugulethu and Sherwood Park Community Centre in Manenberg. This informative event aims to address the concerns of local residents and highlight the benefits of the MyCiTi bus service.

The construction along Govan Mbeki Road is part of the next phase of the MyCiTi bus service, which will connect Ottery Road with Link Road. The project is making significant progress, and Councillor Rob Quintas, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, is inviting residents to attend the information day and learn about the upcoming construction. The MyCiTi bus service will offer quality, safety, and convenience to the community.

Govan Mbeki Road Upgrades for All Road Users and Residents

The construction project along Govan Mbeki Road includes multiple intersection upgrades that benefit all road users and residents. Besides fulfilling the needs of the MyCiTi bus service, the upgrades will alleviate traffic congestion, provide safer cycling and walking lanes, and improve street lighting and landscaping.

The construction process is divided into multiple phases, scheduled to span over three years, starting from September 2023. To minimize disruption, roadworks will be restricted to non-peak traffic periods.

Significant enhancements are planned for Phase 2A of the project, including upgrading 2.4 km of Govan Mbeki Road with dedicated MyCiTi lanes, constructing an open station, expanding bridge support structures, building an elevated bridge, developing two pedestrian bridges and a retaining wall, constructing non-motorized transport facilities, and improving signage, landscaping, drainage, road markings, and traffic signals.

Opportunities for Local Labor Recruitment and Procurement

The project offers opportunities for local labor recruitment and procurement of goods and services from community subcontractors. Residents interested in these opportunities are encouraged to ensure their registration and updated details at the local Subcouncil. Those not yet registered can look forward to new registration drives in their respective areas before the commencement of the construction work.

Positive Changes for Neighborhoods

The MyCiTi construction along Govan Mbeki Road promises several advantages for the City of Cape Town. The upcoming public information day is an essential step toward involving the community in the project and ensuring that they understand the positive changes this development will bring to their neighborhoods.
