The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) is conducting a national consultation meeting on proposed raw water use charges for the 2024/25 financial year. The meeting will take place on August 25, 2023, at the Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg and will be chaired by DWS Director-General Dr. Sean Philips. The purpose of the meeting is to gather inputs and comments from stakeholders in the water sector before final approval by Minister Senzo Mchunu.
The consultation mandated by Section 42 of the Municipal Finance Management Act (MFMA) is an essential step towards ensuring the fairness and equity of raw water use charges. It signifies the government’s commitment to engage with key sector players before approving any price increases for bulk resources supplied to municipalities and municipal entities. By involving all stakeholders in this process, it ensures that the new rates are equitable and fair.
Dr. Philips will lead discussions on a range of topics related to water use charges and service provision during the consultation meeting. These include the status of bulk water infrastructure, verifying and validating water licenses, and institutional reforms in the water sector. Addressing these critical issues will lead to more efficient, effective, and sustainable water management in South Africa.
The consultation meeting aims to address not only the financial aspects of raw water use charges but also the broader context of water management. With climate change posing significant challenges to water resources worldwide, it becomes imperative for South Africa to adopt sustainable practices and ensure the long-term availability of this vital resource for its people and economy.
The national consultation meeting serves as an opportunity for stakeholders to exchange ideas and knowledge, helping the country to develop strategies for overcoming water challenges and ensuring a secure water future. South Africa has faced numerous water challenges in recent years, including droughts, floods, and deteriorating infrastructure.
The consultation meeting will be open to media representatives, with a media doorstop scheduled for 13:00. Interested parties can contact Lebogang Maseko at 083 661 7859 or MasekoL2@dw.gov.za for media confirmations and Wisane Mavasa at 060 561 8935 or mavasaw@dws.gov.za for inquiries.
The national consultation meeting on proposed raw water use charges exemplifies the South African government’s dedication to addressing the country’s water challenges. By engaging with stakeholders from various sectors, the DWS can develop feasible strategies for sustainable water management and ultimately safeguard the well-being of the nation’s citizens and the environment.
