National Wills Week 2023: Educating the Public about the Importance of Wills

The Department of Justice and Constitutional Development, in collaboration with the Law Society of South Africa and other stakeholders, has successfully concluded National Wills Week on September 15, 2023. The week-long campaign aimed to educate the public about the importance of drafting wills and to provide assistance in doing so, free of charge.

Promoting Awareness and Understanding of Wills in Estate Planning

Wills play a vital role in ensuring that individuals’ estates are administered according to their wishes after their passing. The National Wills Week campaign, which spanned from September 11 to September 15, aimed to promote awareness and understanding of the significance of wills in estate planning.

Expert Assistance and Clear Information

During the National Wills Week, legal practitioners and private practice attorneys offered their expertise at service desks set up at Master of the High Court offices throughout the provinces. The public had the opportunity to receive assistance in drafting wills without incurring any costs. This initiative aimed to alleviate concerns and empower attendees with knowledge about their legal rights and options.

Showcasing the Effectiveness of the Initiative

The event at Mthatha Town Hall in the Eastern Cape Province served as the official conclusion of the campaign. Members of the media were invited to cover the happenings, and it was an opportunity for the organizers to showcase their efforts and for the public to witness the effectiveness of the initiative.

Bridging the Gap between the Legal Sector and the General Public

The success of National Wills Week lies in its ability to bridge the gap between the legal sector and the general public. By providing clear and concise information along with expert assistance, the campaign has managed to alleviate the concerns of those who might find the process of estate planning and drafting wills intimidating due to the legal jargon and complexities involved.

Collaboration for a Shared Goal

This initiative highlights the importance of collaboration between various stakeholders to achieve a shared goal. The Department of Justice and Constitutional Development, the Law Society of South Africa, and other participating entities have come together to address a matter of great concern – the lack of awareness and assistance in drafting wills. By offering their knowledge, resources, and time, these organizations have contributed to a cause that could essentially transform the lives of many South Africans.

Impact and Long-Term Change

The impact of National Wills Week is undeniable, and attendees and those who received assistance in drafting their wills have gained invaluable knowledge and peace of mind knowing that their wishes will be honored after their passing. This initiative has laid the groundwork for long-term change, paving the way for better understanding of legal matters among the general public and fostering a sense of security in their future endeavors.

Call to Continue and Support Similar Initiatives

It is crucial that similar initiatives continue to be organized and supported by the government and legal entities alike. By empowering the public with knowledge and assistance, they not only contribute to the betterment of individuals but also help in creating a more legally aware and secure society. National Wills Week has shown that such campaigns can make a significant difference and should be continued and supported to benefit society as a whole.
