North West Province Hospitals Offer Assistance to Maternity Benefit Applicants

The Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) is taking steps to help expectant mothers by providing administrative support to expedite maternity benefit claims. In North West Province, local hospitals have been visited to provide clients with essential information on UIF processes, timelines, and benefit criteria. This initiative aims to prevent delayed claims and customer dissatisfaction.

Empowering Women with Information

UIF Commissioner Teboho Maruping explains that many female workers miss out on maternity benefits due to a lack of awareness. To address this issue, the UIF has decided to visit hospitals in the latter stages of pregnancy. This provides a direct way to educate and inform women about the benefits available to them.

Maternity Benefits Explained

Maternity benefits are a temporary financial relief provided to female contributors during pregnancy and postpartum. Employers and employees must both contribute 1% of the employee’s gross monthly salary to the UIF to qualify for such benefits. The benefits are paid at 66% of the contributor’s earnings at the date of application, subject to a maximum ceiling.

Qualifying for Maternity Benefits

To qualify for maternity benefits, the contributor must have been employed for at least 13 weeks before the application date. Maternity benefits can be received for up to 121 days, provided the contributor has enough available credits. These benefits are independent of other client benefits, as long as the application is lodged before any other benefit type.

Support for Miscarriage or Stillbirth

Contributors who experience a miscarriage in the third trimester or deliver a stillborn child can receive full maternity benefits, subject to the availability of credit days.

Applying for Benefits

UIF Commissioner Maruping encourages contributors to visit the Department of Employment & Labour or use online platforms like UFiling to apply for benefits. Employers who fail to comply with the Unemployment Insurance Act will face inspections from the Department. Female workers will not be denied benefits if contributions have been deducted from them monthly.

Bridging the Information Gap

As UIF supports expectant mothers, this initiative promises to bridge the information gap and bring much-needed relief to women during their maternity leave. By visiting hospitals and providing guidance on maternity benefits, UIF is not only empowering women but also setting the stage for a future where essential information is readily accessible.
