The [North West Province](https://capetown.today/eskom-to-restore-power-in-north-west-province) police in South Africa have been persistent in their fight against crime, making the region safer. Over the weekend, the province’s crime prevention and combating operation, named “Operation Shanela,” made significant strides. This large-scale operation led to the arrest of more than 300 suspects involved in various crimes, ranging from robbery, murder, rape, and attempted murder to illegal possession of firearms, ammunition, and drugs, as well as illegal dealing in liquor.
One of the notable arrests during the operation was that of Riaan Spies. The 32-year-old was apprehended on Thursday afternoon, June 1, 2023, at Skietfontein smallholding in De Wildt, near Brits. Spies faced charges of possession and dealing in drugs. His arrest was part of a multidisciplinary and crime intelligence-driven operation that involved the execution of a search warrant. Upon searching the accused’s premises, the team discovered drug manufacturing equipment, chemicals used to manufacture drugs, approximately 4,000 ecstasy tablets, computer equipment, and a tablet gadget. Spies was later remanded in custody when he appeared before the Brits Magistrates’ Court on June 2, 2023. He is expected to reappear at the same court on June 9 for a formal bail application.
In a separate operation, a multidisciplinary team consisting of Rustenburg Crime Intelligence, Rustenburg K9, Public Order Police (POP), and detectives focused their efforts on Bokamoso Location in the Rustenburg policing precinct. The team dealt decisively with illegal liquor outlets on June 2, 2023. They raided and shut down three illegal liquor outlets, confiscating liquor worth R58,525.00, along with shebeen operating equipment.
The success of these operations can be attributed to the collaborative efforts of various law enforcement branches within the North West Province. Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, the Provincial Police Commissioner, expressed his gratitude to all the members involved in “Operation Shanela.” He commended their commitment to ensuring safer communities by executing numerous crime prevention and combating actions.
“Operation Shanela” stands as a testament to the dedication and perseverance of the North West Province police in their quest to rid their communities of criminal elements. By conducting intelligence-driven operations, as well as working in close collaboration with other branches of law enforcement, the province makes strides towards creating a safer environment for its citizens. As the operation continues to gain momentum, it sends a strong message to criminals that there is no room for illegal activities in the North West Province.
