The North West Provincial Government has shown its support to the Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality’s plans to construct pedestrian and vehicular bridges throughout the region. This investment in infrastructure development aims to improve transportation connectivity and enhance the quality of life for residents.
The North West Provincial Department of Public Works and Roads secured R130 million from the National Department of Public Works and Infrastructure to fund the Welisizwe Rural Bridges project. This initiative focuses on refurbishing pedestrian and vehicular bridges within communities.
The Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality was prioritized for bridge construction due to the devastating floods that occurred in the province during the 2021/22 period. The Department of Public Works identified thirty-five pedestrian bridges for refurbishment, of which twelve were selected for construction in the current financial year following an assessment by the South African National Defence Force and the Department of Public Works.
The provincial department provided an update on the progress of the bridge refurbishment plan to the delegation. They reported that the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has already established sites for six of the bridges, with an acceleration catch-up plan in place to ensure delivery of these structures before the end of this year’s second quarter.
The provincial department also informed the delegation that the materials necessary for the construction of six bridges have already been delivered on 7 September 2023. This milestone paves the way for the construction of two vehicular bridges in Kraaipan village, two pedestrian bridges in Montshioastad, and one vehicular bridge in Masutlhe village.
The North West Provincial Government’s support for the Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipality’s bridge construction efforts is a crucial investment in the future. It ensures that residents can enjoy improved access to essential services, resources, and opportunities. With the backing of the North West Provincial Government and the dedication of all stakeholders involved, the completion of these bridges will undoubtedly have a lasting and transformative impact on the lives of the Ngaka Modiri Molema District’s residents.
