On July 25th, 2023, the Minister of Transport, Ms. Sindisiwe Chikunga, visited the North West Province to address concerns regarding the state of roads and road infrastructure in the region. This visit reflects the government’s commitment to enhancing road infrastructure throughout the country.
During her visit, Minister Chikunga engaged with key stakeholders involved in road infrastructure development, including the Premier, Members of the Executive Council, Mayors, and government officials responsible for roads infrastructure. The aim was to ensure that all parties worked together to improve road conditions for the benefit of all citizens.
In analyzing the Provincial Roads Maintenance Grant (PRMG) report, Chikunga highlighted the North West Province’s poor track record of not fully utilizing allocated funding. Despite appearing to perform above average on a year-on-year basis, the province consistently rolled over funds to subsequent periods. The Minister emphasized the importance of prudent financial management, effective resource utilization, and collaboration between stakeholders.
After productive discussions, several key agreements were reached to elevate the quality of roads for citizens. These included the implementation of the National Pothole Initiative, transfer of strategic roads to the South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL), piloting nano-technology on rural roads, and fostering private sector involvement. These initiatives aim to address the various issues surrounding road infrastructure and maintenance in the province.
Other agreements included the mobilization of yellow plant machinery for pothole repairs and preventative maintenance, training and skills development for yellow plant fleet operators, and the creation of employment and professional development opportunities for unemployed graduates. These measures aim to build a well-equipped and knowledgeable workforce capable of addressing road infrastructure challenges.
Lastly, the Ministry committed to intensifying efforts to support municipalities in identifying unproclaimed roads and ensuring uniform road classification procedures throughout the province. This commitment demonstrates the government’s dedication to addressing road challenges effectively and ensuring safe and efficient road networks for all citizens.
Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga’s visit to the North West Province signifies the government’s commitment to improving road infrastructure. Through collaborative efforts and innovative approaches, the Ministry of Transport aims to elevate the driving experience for all South Africans and pave the way for a more connected and prosperous nation.
