Orlando Pirates Responds to Thembinkosi Lorch’s Assault Conviction

On June 6, 2023, professional football player Thembinkosi Lorch was found guilty of gender-based violence assault by the Randburg Magistrate Court. Lorch is a member of the Orlando Pirates, and the team has issued an official statement regarding their stance on the issue and the actions they have taken since the case came to light in 2020.

Orlando Pirates’ Commitment to Fighting Violence Against Women and Children

In their statement, the Orlando Pirates emphasized their commitment to fighting violence against women and children. They conducted their own investigation, which found Lorch guilty of serious misconduct. As a result, the team imposed a monetary fine and mandated anger management therapy for Lorch.

Lorch’s Response and Rehabilitation Process

Lorch informed the club that he had hired attorneys to handle the criminal charges against him and planned to approach the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for a diversion program. He also reported attending therapy sessions with Dr. Nomsa Nkuna-Boikanyo as part of his rehabilitation process. The team approved of his choice to continue with Dr. Nkuna-Boikanyo’s therapy.

According to Lorch, he completed the required number of anger management therapy sessions and has not been involved in any similar violent incidents since then. The Orlando Pirates believe that the therapy served as an appropriate corrective measure.

Legal Proceedings and Club’s Response

However, Lorch’s representations to the DPP were not successful, and the criminal proceedings continued. The sentencing date has not yet been determined, and the club has requested further details from Lorch. At this time, they will refrain from making any additional comments until the legal proceedings are completed.

Combating Gender-Based Violence in Sports

The Orlando Pirates’ response to Lorch’s conviction highlights the importance of addressing gender-based violence within the realm of professional sports. By enforcing strict guidelines and taking necessary actions in response to player misconduct, sports organizations can help raise awareness and contribute to the prevention of violence against vulnerable populations.

The ongoing case of Thembinkosi Lorch serves as a reminder of the broader societal issue of gender-based violence. The Orlando Pirates’ response to the situation underscores the importance of continuing to address and combat this problem in sports and society as a whole. To create a safer and more inclusive environment, clubs and organizations must continue to enforce strict guidelines and take necessary actions in response to misconduct by their members.
