Overcome Heights Implements Innovative Fire Mitigation Project

Subheading: City and Mandoval Vermiculite Pty Ltd Collaborate to Protect Informal Settlements from Fire

Overcome Heights has been selected as the location for a pilot project to address the growing hazard of fires in informal settlements. The City and Mandoval Vermiculite Pty Ltd are working together to treat at least 300 structures with a fire retardant substance over the next six months. The aim of this ambitious initiative is to minimize the risk of injury, death, and damage to infrastructure, property, and the environment.

Background

In 2021 Mandoval showcased its fire-resistant product at the Epping fire station and now, building upon that successful demonstration, the Overcome Heights pilot project will be funded by Mandoval. Mandoval will provide the necessary product, machinery, and training. The Disaster Risk Management Centre (DRMC) will finance the employment of 11 local community members through the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP).

Implementation

The joint team will work under the guidance of Mandoval staff and a City project manager to apply the fire retardant product to 300-350 structures in a designated section of Overcome Heights. This will cover 10-15% of the settlement. Overcome Heights has already recorded eight fires this year alone, with 2022 and 2021 seeing 20 and 10 fires respectively.

Importance

Alderman JP Smith, Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, emphasizes the importance of this innovative project in mitigating the risk of fires in informal settlements to save lives and protect property. The growing international phenomenon where housing projects struggle to keep pace with the demand for formal housing has made it even more imperative to address the risks faced by informal settlements.

Training

Mandoval has equipped the EPWP workers with the skills to apply the vermiculite product. They have received five days of practical training, including occupational, health, and safety courses.

Future Funding

The success of this pilot project could secure further funding from Informal Settlements Management in the Human Settlements Department. Such financing could come from public or private sources and extend the project’s reach to other parts of the city, making a tangible difference in the lives of those residing in informal settlements.

The launch of this fire mitigation pilot project highlights the potential for innovative solutions when addressing the unique challenges that informal settlements face. With a blend of modern technology, community engagement, and inter-organizational collaboration, this project could serve as a blueprint for future fire prevention efforts in similar urban environments.
