The City of Cape Town is working towards creating a local spatial development framework (LSDF) for the Blaauwberg Road Corridor in Table View. To gather feedback on the review of the 1998 Blaauwberg Road Growth Management Strategy, the city has invited residents and other stakeholders to participate in open days scheduled for September 2023.
The LSDF seeks to provide a roadmap for future spatial development in the area, which is vital for shaping the neighborhood’s appearance and overall atmosphere. The Blaauwberg Road Corridor, a 5km stretch from Marine Circle in the west to the intersection with Koeberg Road in the east, is a significant transport route with substantial potential for urban regeneration.
The Urban Planning and Design Department has prepared a discussion document to present at the open days. This document reviews the 1998 Growth Management Strategy, analyzes its implementation, and highlights recent development trends, challenges, and possible solutions. The document also identifies trends and opportunities, as well as proposing preliminary ideas for the LSDF.
Residents can attend two interactive sessions to learn about the process, meet the project team, and contribute their own ideas and suggestions. The open days will be held on:
Posters summarizing the discussion document will also be available for viewing throughout the open days.
Deputy Mayor and Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment, Alderman Eddie Andrews, encourages local residents, businesses, and other stakeholders to attend the open days and submit their comments. Those who cannot attend can access the document and provide input online or via email.
The ultimate goal is to formulate a future spatial vision for the corridor that will guide public and private developments, strengthen the local economy, and promote the area as a quality tourist destination, particularly at the Marine Circle end.
Upon approval, the LSDF for the Blaauwberg Road Corridor will support the spatial development guidelines outlined in the Blaauwberg District Spatial Development Framework, which serves as a higher order spatial plan for the area.
The City of Cape Town seeks collaboration with residents and interested parties in drafting the local spatial development framework for the Blaauwberg Road Corridor in Table View. These open days offer a valuable opportunity to review the 1998 Blaauwberg Road Growth Management Strategy and provide input towards the LSDF.
