“Pathways to Employment”: An In-Depth Overview of the Northern Cape Province Careers Fairs

The Northern Cape Province is preparing for a significant event in collaboration with the Department of Employment and Labour, SETAs, and the John Taolo Gaetsewe District Municipality to host Careers Fairs during the National Careers Week from 24 to 26 May 2023. The main objective of the program is to provide job seekers with a platform to interact with potential employers and receive guidance on various employment and learning pathways.

Event Details

The department’s Careers Fair program will start on 24 May 2023 at the De Aar Labour Centre and continue to Kuruman on 25 and 26 May 2023. The inauguration of an Employment Centre by the Deputy Minister of Employment and Labour, Boitumelo Moloi, will be a significant highlight of the event in De Aar. The centre aims to support the unemployed by facilitating registration for work, providing access to job search services, and offering other opportunities to secure employment or training.

Meanwhile, the Kuruman event will feature a keynote address by Deputy Minister Moloi to local employers on 25 May, followed by the launch of the Public Employment Service mobile buses. This assembly will also allow job seekers to register with the Department’s Employment Services System of South Africa (ESSA) and have their career choices assessed. Additionally, informative presentations designed to offer job hunting tips will be included in the event’s agenda.

Importance of the Event

Mr Sam Morotoba, Deputy Director-General of Public Employment Services, emphasizes the significance of these events in showcasing various employment opportunities and pathways to work seekers. Employment Counsellors will play a critical role in sharing their expertise with job seekers, training them in essential skills like job-hunting techniques, CV preparation, networking, and interview tactics.

Target Audience and Activities

The Career Fairs are open to a diverse audience, including the unemployed, retrenched individuals, learners, parents, Career Development Practitioners, and employers. The two-day program encompasses a range of activities, such as work-seekers registration, motivational talks, job hunting skills workshops, CV writing, completing the Z83 application form, networking, and interview skills sessions.

Overall, the Northern Cape Province Careers Fairs aim to be a valuable experience for all attendees, providing a platform for job seekers to discover various employment opportunities while receiving valuable career guidance. With the support of Employment Counsellors and numerous government and private entities, the event demonstrates the Department of Employment and Labour’s dedication to providing accessible and diverse employment pathways for the citizens of South Africa. The initiative reflects a broader commitment to tackling unemployment and equipping individuals with the necessary tools and support to succeed in their careers.
