What is Paws on the Promenade?
Paws on the Promenade is a dog walk fundraiser hosted by Khayelitsha’s Mdzananda Animal Clinic in collaboration with Vondi’s Holistic Pet Nutrition. It offers a picturesque five-kilometer course along the Sea Point promenade, entertainment and treats, and a chance to meet and potentially adopt dogs. Anyone is welcome to attend, with tickets priced at R50 per person, R50 per dog, and R25 for children under 12. The event aims to raise funds for animals in need and is held annually.
After a two-year break due to the pandemic, the highly anticipated sixth edition of Paws on the Promenade is finally back, bringing together people and their furry friends for a heartwarming dog walk fundraiser. Hosted by Khayelitsha’s Mdzananda Animal Clinic in collaboration with Vondi’s Holistic Pet Nutrition, this event guarantees an enchanting morning that positively impacts the lives of animals in need.
On Sunday, October 29th, starting at 9 am, the Paws on the Promenade fundraiser will commence at the iconic Mouille Point lighthouse. Participants will follow a beautiful five-kilometer course, leading to the Sea Point swimming pool and back. For those with elderly, tired, or injured pets (and their human companions), shorter turnaround points will be provided along the route.
In an effort to foster inclusivity, event organizers encourage all to attend, whether you have a pet, are an animal enthusiast without a furry friend or simply enjoy a morning walk for a noble cause. If you don’t have a dog but wish to walk one, email [email protected] to make arrangements.
Additionally, several dogs looking for permanent homes will be at the event, giving potential adopters a chance to meet their future best friend.
Marcelle du Plessis, Mdzananda’s fundraising and communications executive and the event organizer, fondly reminisces on the success of the 2020 Paws on the Promenade. The event drew over 350 dogs and raised R48,400 with a minimal budget of just R3,500. Du Plessis hopes this year’s event will yield even greater proceeds, depending on the turnout of eager participants and their canine companions.
With tickets set at R50 per person, R50 per dog, and R25 for children under 12, the event is truly accessible to everyone. Tickets can be acquired from Quicket or on the event day beginning at 8 am near the lighthouse.
In addition to the mesmerizing seaside walk, Paws on the Promenade offers a variety of exciting activities for attendees. Raffle prizes, merchandise sales, delicious food, and fragrant coffee will be available for everyone to enjoy. Furthermore, an assortment of crafts will be on display, ensuring that both humans and their four-legged friends remain entertained throughout the event.
It’s worth mentioning that the first 100 dogs to arrive will receive a complimentary goodie bag, reinforcing the saying, “the early bird catches the worm.”
In honor of October’s popular holiday, Paws on the Promenade organizers encourage participants to dress up in Halloween costumes or showcase the Mdzananda Animal Clinic’s brand color by wearing something orange. However, please note that all dogs must be on leashes during the event.
