Pioneering Green and Blue Spaces for Mental Health and Wellness: A South African Development’s Holistic Approach

In recent years, the connection between mental health and nature has been gaining recognition. Integrative medical practitioner Dr. Ledivia Strauss, the owner of Revitahealth in the Western Cape, highlights the significant role that green and blue spaces play in our well-being and the potential they hold for future development projects in South Africa.

The Impact of Green and Blue Spaces on Health

The BlueHealth2020 project, a groundbreaking study that analyzed data from 18 countries, revealed the profound influence of green and blue spaces on overall health. People living within one kilometer of green areas experienced lower rates of anxiety and depression. Access to these spaces reduced the likelihood of depression by up to 26%. Exposure to nature has also been shown to boost cognitive function, reduce stress, and even lower blood pressure. Proximity to blue spaces, such as rivers, lakes, and coastlines, also correlated with improved mental health.

The Importance of Nature During the Pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the need for daily access to nature. Incorporating natural spaces into our routines can significantly enhance our mood, blood glucose levels, and productivity, even with just a walk in the park. With the growing awareness of the significance of nature, innovative projects are emerging that capitalize on the benefits of green and blue spaces in our daily lives.

Devonbosch: A Holistic Development in South Africa

Devonbosch is a new development in South Africa’s Winelands, created by Squareturn Developments. This ambitious venture prioritizes holistic health, offering an ideal environment that embodies healthy destination living. Devonbosch features a man-made lake, ponds full of birdlife, mountain biking trails, and various other activities that contribute to the residents’ holistic well-being. The development aims to set a precedent for future projects by prioritizing mental and metabolic health, sustainability, and walkability.

Embracing Green and Blue Spaces Worldwide

Cities worldwide are embracing the significance of green and blue spaces in urban planning. Paris and New York City have committed to creating new green spaces and increasing green infrastructure in their neighborhoods. As the awareness of the benefits of nature on mental health and well-being continues to grow, incorporating natural spaces into our daily lives is gaining momentum.

Devonbosch is an inspiring example of incorporating nature into our living and working environments to maintain our mental health and well-being. As our understanding of the relationship between mental health and nature expands, it is increasingly vital for developments like Devonbosch to prioritize the integration of green and blue spaces to create healthier, more sustainable communities for the future.
